Good morning
I am trying to configure PCNS to shutdown my VMs gracefully and am getting confused. Using PMAR-9DNLQK_R4_EN.pdf as source material.
I overspec'd the UPS by adding an extra battery and have around 7 hours of Runtime Remaining:
NMC version: 6.5.6
PCNS version: 4.3 (running on vCenter)
I have set the Low Battery Duration (NMC) to 10 minutes. This I believe is the estimated time before the battery becomes depleted.
In PCNS (in Virtualization Settings) the Virtual Machine and Virtual Appliance, Shutdown and Startup Shutdown Duration is set at 120 seconds. Is this figure per VM (I have 13) or all VMs?
Page 33 states "The Duration field is the time allowed for all the VMs/vApps to gracefully shut down", which would indicate that this is for all VMs and vApps. With these settings PCNS reports an "Available runtime has been exceeded" erorr.
Condition 3 of https://www.apc.com/us/en/faqs/FA241713/ seems to apply to my scenario and states as a solution:
"Increase the Low Battery Duration value on the NMC using Configure - Shutdown or decrease the shutdown durations being used by PowerChute", but if the VM Shutdown Duration for all VMs is 2 minutes and the vCenter Server VM Shutdown Duration is 4 minutes then the Low Battery Duration has 4 minutes to spare (if I'm correct!)
Am I missing something?
Tony

Hi,
On 11/6/2019 6:22 AM, Tony said:Why am I getting the "Available runtime has been exceeded" error?
The warning is posted because runtime has been exceeded take into account VM/vApp shutdown delay, vCenter shutdown delay, VM/vApp startup duration, 2 minutes for OS shutdown command delay, and an additional 2 minutes. So, with your configuration the low battery duration should be a minimum of 12 minutes to clear the warning.
There is a diagram on page 105 of the User's Guide that shows the process. The diagram shows 70 second delay for OS shutdown command and that is rounded up to 2 minutes.

Hi,
10 minutes is the minimum and would be sufficient base on VM and vCenter shut down durations of 6 minutes. Did you configure VM migration, VM start-up or have you configured prioritization. Those number will affect the time needed to safely power down and trigger the warning.

Thanks Bill,
Migration hasn't been configured, but VM start-up is enabled an the default value.
Why am I getting the "Available runtime has been exceeded" error?
