I just purchased an Apple Xserve and an Apple Xserve RAID. I only have 120V service where I'm putting the servers. The Xserve is rated with a maximum AC line current of 8A at 120V (if my calculations are correct, it will draw a maximum of 960W). And the Xserve RAID is rated at a maximum power consumption of 450 watts total.
Now I need to get a UPC for both of these systems and I'd like to get just one UPS for both. My question is whether I can initiate a graceful shutdown of both systems from one UPS. The Xserve can be shutdown from the network if the UPS has a network card while the Xserve RAID has two serial ports, one for each power supply, which can listen to the status of the UPS. I don't know how that works and I'm wondering what an optimal configuration would look like.
Thanks for any insight you can give me!
