Advice on software configuration for Server shutdown procedure

Hi All,

I'm just looking for some advice on setting up our UPS software please.

We have 2 APC UPS's (a Smart UPS X 1500 with network management card and a smart UPS 2200)

We have these 2 UPS's and our firewall connected to the mains.

The smart UPS X 1500 (with network managent card) has 1 physical server, switches, routers, POE and fibre line connected. This physical server is a Hyper-V management server running 5 VM Servers, these VM servers are integral to our companies operations. It also has 2 PSU's and is connected to both the UPS and the mains.

The smart UPS 2200 has 3 physical servers connected. 2 of these servers have 2 PSU's and are connected to both the UPS and the mains. These physical servers are not integral to our companies operations.

My hopeful requirements:

Both of the UPS's will give around 30 mins of battery power with the loads as described.

For the Smart UPS 2200 i am happy for all of the connected servers to just safely shutdown at around 10% of battery remaining.

Now the Hyper-V management server connected to the Smart UPS X 1500 is a little more tricky. I would like it so that at 60% battery remaining one of the Hyper-v VM's shutsdown, then at 50% battery remaining another one of the VM's shutsdown and so on until all 5 VM's are safely shutdown and then at 10% remaining the physical server itself is shutdown.

If this shutdown procedure is started, i.e. at 60% battery remaining, i want all of the VM's to shutdown.

It is very important to our infrastructure that the VM's shutdown in a particular order and that if the first is shut down that they all are shutdown.

Also I would like to have it so that when power is restored the opposite of this procedure happens, so that the physical server starts up and then the 5 VM's start up in the particualr order needed.

Any advise for the above scenerio is very welcomed!

Reading this post back i understand that this maybe hard to follow so sorry for that!

Thanks in advance! smile

Hi,

Please clarify, do you have 2 Smart-UPS 1500 with network management cards and 2 Smart-UPS 2200 with out network management cards? If so the first thing needed is to purchase network management cards for the 2200. Once that is done you can install PowerChute Network Shutdown utilizing the redundant UPS feature. See application note 98 for information on redundant UPS configuration.

If you have 1 Smart-UPS 1500 with network Management card and 1 Smart-UPS 2200 with out a card you should purchase a network management card for the 2200 and then review application note 98.

PowerChute Network Shutdown version 3.1 offers the ability to shutdown the VMs running on the Hyper-V host and then power down the host. However, you cannot schedule VM shutdown order. To schedule VM shutdown order I would install PCNS on the host and not enable VM shutdown. Then install PCNS on each VM (this is assuming the OS is supported) and schedule the VM and host shutdown according to the criteria needed.

For the none Hyper-V / VM systems you should install PCNS on each of those and configured the shutdown as needed. Again, this is assuming those OS are supported.
