AVR Trim coming on regularly - anything I can do?

Hi guys,

I have a Smart-UPS 3000XL.

Here in Australia our voltage is to be supplied at 230V +10%/-6%, which gives us a range of 216.2V - 253.0V. The line voltage at our place is always towards the top end of that range - between 236.1V and 253.4V since 10th Jan this year according to the data log of the UPS. Voltage seems to be higher during times of low load, and lower during peak time, which makes sense.

I find that AVR Trim comes on quite regularly, and sometimes for a few hours at a time. I have sensitivity set to low, and the high transfer voltage set to 253V. There are only two logged voltage events over 253V in that time (two from over a thousand logged values), but I see AVR Trim on quite regularly when the line voltage is being logged at 247-249V.

I've had our power utility guys here testing the voltage at our distribution box - it was 250V the day they were here. Because it's under 253V, their maximum allowed votage, they don't seem interested in doing anything about it.

My questions:

1. Is this going to cause me any problems? i.e. Is having AVR Trim active so regularly going to pose any issues?
2. Is there anything I can do about it? Would raising the high transfer voltage have any effect (given that AVR Trim comes on at voltages lower than that already?)

Cheers!
Mat.

I don't know the specifics on that UPS, but can you raise the upper limit higher? Many power supplies are rated 94 to 264v, so a higher transfer voltage wouldn't be a big issue.
