A few Apc9630 NMC in our organisation indicate a false positive "on battery" via snmp only after a battery test. It's always the same NMC and facilities with multiple cards only 1 will have the issue.
We have updated the FW to the latest. Has anyone seen this issue?

Hello Eric,
since me and my colleague are experiencing exactly the same error with 2 of our AP9630 installations, I'm curious if you have found a solution to this problem? I'm sorry for replying to this relatively old thread - but as of now the APC technical support of Germany wasn't able to help me.
Thanks in advance and best regards
Mikis

Hi Eric,
Is it possible for you to send us a copy of your NMC's log files as well as the screenshot of the SNMP that you were getting? Kindly follow the steps outlined on the kbase listed below on how to download the log files.

Sorry for the long reply, I only remember about this when it happens.
I attached all the files in the event after we see this:
"11/17/2011 19:15:41 UPS: Started a self-test. 0x0137"
Is when the NMC returns a false positive from this OID:
.1.3.6.1.4.1.318.1.1.1.4.1.1.0
Thanks in advance!

Sorry I completely missed the second part.
Yes we are walking the OID, we can't use traps for some reasons I can't go
into. It gets polled every 5 min, and we would understand if the status was "3" only during the test that would explain the problem but this OID polls as "3" forever after a battery test is finished or until we reset the NMC.
In the picture that was 1 hour after the battery test in the log.
Thanks again.

can i ask what model of UPS this is in just incase we need that?
also, that is the OID for UPS basic status. how often are you polling that OID? cause to me, its not a trap your getting but a GET on an OID for status. when the UPS does a self test, it is on battery, which is what the 3 indicates in the response. 2 indicates online. if you are polling this often and every single time the UPS does a self test, technically its not incorrect and we may need to just adjust your configuration and how its looking at that OID. i thought it was a trap you were getting but i dont think so.

ok, i will start to look into this. i noticed in your log that the NMC is not logging a self test passed event so i am wondering if the NMC is not seeing the correct status when the self test is complete and thus is not logging the self test passed event which is also affecting the output OID.
give me a few days to replicate and investigate and I will see what we find. i might not be able to post back until early next week since i'll be on vacation but i will make a note here. i need to track down some similar units to see if i can replicate.
Edit - i was able to do this quicker than i thought. i have a similar unit and i tried it on the same NMC firmware (AOS 5.1.6/sumx 5.1.6) by commanding a self test and did not see the issue. the OID changed back to online after my self test completed. are you able to replicate the issue this way as well or only when the UPS does its scheduled self test?
depending on what you say, the only difference I see is the firmware on my unit is newer and if we are stuck, i might suggest we try to upgrade one of yours.
my unit had UPS 08.0 / MCU 12.0 / UBL 08.4 / MBL 12.0 (ID18). i also tried on a few other models and did not replicate the issue.

Hi,
I have several Smart-UPS 3000 with the same issue. I poll all my UPS units daily and several of these models constantly show On-Battery. I'm checking about 1500 UPS units and it's just a handful that have this problem.
I'm checking against: 1.3.6.1.4.1.318.1.1.1.4.1.1.0
Mike

Hey guys,
I want to reiterate that we have upgraded to the latest FW on the APC site and the cards affected are in sites that have multiple units that were all purchased at the same time.
One card will have this problem consistently where the other does not.
PS.
I'm glad Mike posted to show that we are not crazy. 🙂

I believe that the firmware i picKed a winna is referring to is the UPS's internal firmware, which is separate from the management card's firmware.

Terry was right, i_picked_a_winna posted the firmware of her UPS (UPS/MCU/UBL). On newer Smart-UPS (SMT and SMX) the firmwares can be upgraded. You will need to call our Technical Support Hotline in order to obtain the correct files for your UPS and it needs to be done over the phone. Failure to follow a step can lead to UPS being bricked.

You'll need to wait for one of the APC folks to respond. In the older APC products that I have, the firmware is in one-time-programmable parts. I believe that in at least some of the newer APC products, there is some way to field update it. I suspect that it isn't in the general download area because unlike the management card which isn't critical to basic operation of the UPS, it is critical to the operation of the UPS and a problem in the update process could render the UPS unusable to the point where you'd have to ship the whole UPS back to APC for repair.
