I have rack components that were purchased in excess and I am beyond the return window from my vendor. The UPS is a Smart-UPS RT 5000VA RM. I am about to order the APC9626 Step Down Transformer. The Output Receptacles are NEMA 5-20R. The Servers I am going to install on the Rack with the UPS and Transformer have NEMA 5-15P plugs. Can I plug these plugs into these receptacles? If not, is there a convertor that I need to purchase?

Hello,
The NEMA 5-20R receptacles are basically commercial standard. They are the same type of three prong with a right angle on one of the prong, receptacles that are found in large commercial buildings. You should have no problem plugging your NEMA 5-15P power cords into this Step Down.

Is there any danger to plugging the 5-15P into the 5-20R?

Hello,
The voltage passed will still be the same. The 20A receptacle just allows a larger current to be used on the circuit (e.g. 20A will normally want to utilize 80% of the current draw, which is 16A). With the 5-15 plug on there, the max you can draw off of that plug is 12A, so you should have nothing to worry about, power wise. You've actually left yourself overhead if you wanted to add a PDU off of the transformer.

NEMA 5-20R is designed to accept the plugs we're all familiar with everywhere, as well as the 5-20P, which has a horizontal neutral blade.
The NEMA 5-20P is designed such specifically to prevent it from being plugged into an ordinary outlet.
20A recep. accepts 15A and 20A plugs
15A recep. designed to disallow 20A plug from entering.
