APC SmartUPS 3000XL not working on Generator Power

All,

I know this subject has probably been beat to death. (i've searched and read).

I'm at witts end. It is a state requirement that we be able to operate on alternate power for up to one week.

We have Generators
We have the electrical wiring
We have ELECTRICITY to all of our equipment BUT what's connected throught the UPS's

I have adjusted the Voltage sensativity to LOW and they still wont accept power from the generator.

We're on a budget (meaning the company is stingey)

Is there some kind of device that we can put 'in line' with the power coming from the generator to 'regulate' the power so that the UPS's will accept the power??

If not - what do you suggest (buying new generator or new UPS is not an option)

I can only think that we bypass the UPS.............

Seriously - we dont have much equipment (two servers, a dialer and a router + hubs and such). During Hurricane Isabel I ran electrical equipment at my house for TEN DAYS with a portable generator and the gear lived........

Hi There

I just wondered how you got on as I too have the same problem. We have installed a 2 cylinder diesel generator and although everything runs fine apart from a very slight flicker of the lights, the Smart UPS 1500 refuses to go back on to mains power.

What test equipment can I use to check the frequency please? I am in the UK so am operating on 240v. Is there any way I can find out from the APC UPS why it does not want to go on to mains power?

Thanks

John

i assume there is no adjustment of any sorts on this generator? are you able to verify what the issue actually is (with a voltmeter or oscilloscope)? is it voltage out of range? frequency out of range? rate of change? do you have any software/management accessories installed to check the data and event logs to see what the issue is reported as?

it may be a good idea to try and figure out what variable is causing the UPS to go to battery so we can find the correct solution, because it may require something different depending on what it is (voltage, frequency, etc)

Wow - a LOT of great questions there........

Have to do some verification then re-schedule a test of the generator and take the necessary measurements.

Do I take the Frequency and Voltage meaasurements while the load form the UPS's is applied - or while the load is NOT applied? (which - or both?)

THANKS!

i would take the measurements from a receptacle that is providing output power from the generator - so maybe the outlet that the UPS is plugged into? remove it temporarily and check to see what it is inputting to the UPS.

that'd be the best spot in my opinion.

Have scheduled power generator test scheduled for this coming Friday (11/12) We'll see what happens - and will post results here!
