APC Smart-UPS 1000VA LCD 230V versus APC Smart-UPS C 1000VA LCD 230V

Hi all,

first of all i'm sorry if i'm in the wrong section.

I need to update my UPS to protect 2 ReadyNAS PRO Businness Edition and 1 ReadyNAS PRO Pioneer Edition, each with 6 disk inside,respectively with a total space of 12Tb, 10Tb and 6 Tb , a Zyxel GS1124A Switch a JVC HD1 projector (and a Server but this is working only few hours a month..).

I need to find a product that:

a)  permit to comunicate with this 3 NAS and giving them the signal to shut down after a predefined time that the external power has gone down (the Projector has not an easy way to give a shut-down command, but if it's on i'm there...and i could use the remote to shut it down manually... 🙂 ).

b) is not too much noisy..(i use it in a quiet room).

c) give to the devices 8-10 minutes of life then proceed with the shut-down.

d) The mean consumption power should be roughly 300 with a Max peak of 500 Watt.

The most important point to me is the first: sending a signal to the NAS that in the critical moment are On in order to shut htem off, so the could swicth off normally

without a risk of losing some file due to a immediate shutdown..

Searching the web i found these 2 products:

1) APC Smart-UPS 1000VA LCD 230V 

2) APC Smart-UPS C 1000VA LCD 230V

So the first question is:

1) have these products some method to comunicate with this king of devices..? If i connect the UPS with one ReadyNAS through the USB cable the ReadyNAS could "see" the UPS..?

2) I'm in doubt between these two model and i do not understand why reading the specifications i notice that:

With a load of 200W the old model give power for roughly 45 minutes and the new C model only for 26 minutes...

Is it right..? I thought that it should be not so much difference between two model that have same 1000 VA specification..

3) If there is no way to communicate with the NAS with the USB cable is it possible to install in these products some Network Card (like the AP9630..) ? or should i choose another product..?

4) in this situation is it possible to connect the 3 NetGear NAS with the same network card installed in the UPS..?I try already to install the PowerChute on one of my ReadyNas PRO following the info written by Anglea in this thread, and it seems all is working (of course except the phisical presence of the APC UPS... 🙂 )

In other word are the two models i find a good solution for my needs..?

Do you suggest to me other products..?

Just to give you a bit more info regarding the 2 UPS you looked at:

SMT1000:

This is the better units of the two as it has more features than the other unit. This unit also has a battery with a better capacity which mean it has a better runtime for the same amount of load, in your case 200-300W. The other good feature of this unit is that it has a Smart Slot which allows you to install an AP9630 or AP9631 network card which enables network capabilities for the UPS. With this card you can initiate shutdown commands via the card and PowerChute Network Shutdown (PCNS(software)) over the network by setting up some thresholds / parameters for shutting down.

SMC1000:

This unit has a similar capacity but the unit has a lower capacity battery which means for the same amount of load 200-300 you will get less runtime as you saw. This unit doesn't have a Smart Slot, but the unit has  a serial interface which can be used in a similar way as the network card. You only use a serial cable plugged into a main server which has PowerChute Business Edition (PCBE(software)) installed with  agents of PCBE installed on all other servers that require shutdown. The main server can then shut down all the other servers according to the thresholds and parameters you set. The draw back on this unit would be that it doesn't have as much runtime as the SMT1000.

In the end its possibly going to come down to how much money you have available to spend on your solution. My personal preference would have been to go for the SMT1000 but because you have noise constraints you can possibly look into getting a SURT1000XLI or SURT1000RMXLI (rack mountable) which is an online UPS which I believe produces less noise than either of the other two UPS's. The SURT1000XLI is a lot more expensive than either of the other units though.

According to the Netgear ReadyNAS documentation an APC Smart-UPS shiould be compatible with your Netgear ReadyNAS via USB to a "master" NAS with the othe NAS' as "slaves". So it is not necessary to buy an AP9630/1 card.
