I work at a computer shop that accepts old equipment for recycling. And a doctor recently
dropped off a bunch of a equipment to us for recycling from her hospital, amongst which was
an APC Smart UPS 1000.
However, the company that handles our recycling does not take such things, so my boss
let me have it.
Anyway, the unit will not power on.
When it's plugged in, no lights on the front come on, and the "site wiring fault" light in the back comes in.
However, it did not come with a battery, and as I understand, some of these will not turn on without
a battery installed.
There isn't any sign of obvious damage to it, as far as I can tell. But I can only tell that it does not look
like it has been dropped, had anything spilled on it, no damage to any outlets or burnt/funny smells, etc.
It actually looks like it's in shape and still has the "helpful information inside" thingy stuck to the back.
So I have two questions, for any kind and knowledgeable souls that feel like answering them:
1. Is there any way to test the unit and verify that it's in good working order without the battery? I don't mean
to any degree of perfection, you know. But well enough that I could feel confident in either using it myself, or
selling it to someone else? I don't want to sell anyone faulty equipment, if that's the way I end up going with it.
2. If there is not, would you say it would be worthwhile to purchase a battery in order to test it?
I don't know if it was donated because it's shot, or if the hospital just upgraded their equipment.
But thanks in advance to anyone who helps me figure it out :).

I've never tried it and it's certainly not recommended by APC, but KVAr suggests a test using a wall wart in [this thread|http://forums.apc.com/spaces/5/smart-ups-symmetra-lx-rm/forums/general/4334/smartups-3000-repairable...].
