APC 3000 New Battery, Doesn't work still

I have a used APC 3000 UPS, I have bought a new battery for it as i assumed the one installed was a dead as a dodo.

I have put the new battery in, When plugging into the UPS it sparks which shows that it is charged.

The UPS then makes a squeeking type of noise, But refuses to power on still, Plug in the power and still nothing.

Does anyone have any ideas / suggestions for me?

Thankyou,E

The sticker is DLA3000RM12U

YS0330310594

The sensitivity light is not lit... Presumably this is my problem?

okay...i was able to view the video. i want to say i have seen this before but i am not sure the exact cause of that but i'd have to suggest either replacing it or repairing it through an authorized repair center, such as coastal business machines since it isnt technically repairable by the end user.

i will follow up tomorrow though to see if we can tell you what specifically that is or if i have any more info on it for you. it sounds like something weird with the buzzer/alarm inside, but if that was the case, i would still expect it to turn on or show some signs of life.

ok i double checked. it could be a couple of different things inside the unit so the official recommendation would be to replace/repair the unit.

OK, you will need a Voltmeter...

Measure the Voltage across the Battery Terminals and try to start the UPS.
If you get a significant Voltage drop below the shutdown Battery Voltage (that is ~ 20V on 24V systems and 40V on 48V batteries), then the battery is bad.

If the battery is good, open the unit and follow the leads from the battery terminals to the control board. Pay special attention to the battery disconnect plug, which has given me problems on the 1500 units when the spade connector was sinking into the chassis and making just a superficial contact.

The fact that the battery connector is sparking says little or nothing about the state of the battery, because that spark comes from the momentary charging of the condensers.

Hope that helps...

I have seen (or rather heard) this problem a couple of times before and both times it has been a battery issue. While the unit supports hot-swap, I'm pretty sure it won't start without a battery connected so if you still have the old cartridge on hand, put that back into the unit and see what happens when you switch it on - with no load. Even if the battery doesn't hold charge, the unit should still operate (although it may complain) and this would point to a problem with the new battery.

Frankly, I've found it to be false economy to purchase 3rd party batteries and I'm prepared to pay a little bit extra for a genuine APC replacement. If it turns out to be the cartridge, it's cost you a lot more in time than you could potentially save.

Hope this helps.

can you please tell us the exact model of the UPS? this should be on a little white sticker on the back of the UPS most likely along with the serial number.

also, assuming this is a Smart UPS, beginning with SU or SUA for the model number, while the UPS is plugged in - is there a green sensitivity LED lit on the back?

what happens if you push the button next to the LED? does it come on at all? this at least gives us a quick way to tell the UPS is seeing utility power.

oh, crud. i forgot and had a brain fart. one of the differences between the Dell units versus actual APC units are the fact they dont have this LED/feature. i apologize for the hassle!

you can try cold starting the UPS to see if it does anything different since you are hearing noises. to do this:

disconnect any load from the UPS. unplug it from AC power. remove any communication cables also. hold down the test (|) button on the UPS and wait for two beeps. let go DURING the second beep and see if the UPS starts on battery. you may have to try it a couple of times to get the timing right. if the UPS starts, try plugging it into AC power to see if it comes online.

are you able to check the actual voltage on the batteries you installed. i agree since they sparked they are probably fine. are these genuine APC batteries or third party? are we sure the wiring is correct on them if they are third party?

theres [this thread here|http://forums.apc.com/spaces/5/smart-ups-symmetra-lx-rm/forums/general/4334/smartups-3000-repairable...] which i cannot endorse doing and opening the UPS due to a hazard or anything that may come of it, but it may be helpful in just confirming that these batteries are good or bad if you cant do any of the above. again this is a last resort that i dont officially recommend but you could think about doing it if you are comfortable/experienced and if we think the batteries may be an issue at any point.

hope this helps!

No problem πŸ™‚ The LED is there, Just not working 😞

I will try the cold start trick.

The batteries are 3rd party, however they are the right model for the UPS as i double checked this in 3 different places before purchasing.

Will let you know how i get on πŸ™‚

(if i can find my voltmeter i'll do the battery checks)

Still nothing,

It's doing the same as this video,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y05lYlb60Do

I don't know if it's the UPS or the Battery pack doing it...

Any suggestions?

Update to this:

I've ripped the rack apart now where the unit was, And i can see it DOES have a green LED light on it.

It's not lit when on battery, With power, Or anything.

I also tested plugging in an APC 1917 card, as this has brought other units back to life.

Nothing with this unit.

If the green sensitivity light isn't lit, What's the cause?

Regards,E
