I purchased a AP9617 off E-Bay as a upgrade from my AP9606 card.
When I tried swapping the cards, the 9617 did not "boot" and hung
my UPS with just the "ONLINE" led flashing.
Pushing "OFF", then releasing just went back to "ONLINE" led flash.
I tried using my serial cable to check UPS, that did not work.
Swapping back to 9606 card everything just fine.
Some info on UPS.
Smart UPS-1400
Firmware 70.9.D
Mfg. date: 12/10/97

After a close inspection / comparison with the working AP9617 from my office I found
that one surface mounted component is missing (ripped off card) from my dead card.
The part is labeled C9 / C9A

Well done Menkelis ! - you are a pretty resourceful person to be able to fix your own network card in that way and save it from going to the landfill ! Hope the card gives you many years of service.

AP9617 information
Three stickers found
Backside next to MAC: BA0848001750
Top of card: 1040219900524650
On chip: 8262T/R3.5.8
No lights on AP9617, with and without network cable.
I have read that they should flash as the card boots, which is why I wrote that there was no boot.
This is the only UPS I have with a SmartSlot. I will check at work to see if there is a spare
UPS that has a SmartSlot so that I can compare.
At this time I have my original AP9606 back in the UPS and it is working just fine, and I can
access the web page.
It acts like something is "holding" the communication bus so that
the UPS does not initialize.

Yes, I agree. It does sound like a card specific issue but I also was curious if this UPS was so old that it did not work properly with something newer than an AP9606.
You said the model is Smart UPS-1400 - is that what it says on the white sticker on the back or do you see something like SU1400NET? I ask because I suspect Smart-UPS 1400 came from the AP9606 and is not the exact SKU of your UPS. Although, older Smart UPS did have model numbers like that (in the early 90s and yours is from '97) so what is what I am trying to figure out. I could then verify if a UPS this old would work with AP9617. You would think it does but I am not 100% sure based on the symptom you're describing.

Yes the message "Smart UPS-1400" cam from the AP9606, and is the label on the front of the UPS.
When I get home after work I will check for another sticker on the back. The UPS when bought did
not have the AP9606 pre-installed. I bought the card for another UPS that I no longer have, a Smart UPS-700.
I checked at work, and there are APC UPS here but they have keying "tabs" to prevent 9617 from being plugged in.
On the other hand, in our spare's locker there is a AP9617 card that I can borrow overnight and
will see if it also causes my UPS to hang.
I will post back result tomorrow when I get back to work.

Yea, SMT3000RMT's.
Just as a FYI, at home I did a complete shut down of UPS, pulled cord, then pushed "OFF" button
until click. Then swapped cards. On plugging in UPS, it went to a "flashing" ONLINE lamp and
that is where it stayed. The power outlets were hot (bypass mode) which was expected from
the times I have changed battery packs before.

Sounds good. I presume the UPSs at work are the newer style with LCDs as well.
I look forward to your response and findings

The sticker on my UPS says the unit is a SU1400NET.
I put in the 9617 card I borrowed from work, and it works just fine.
So it looks like I have a dead card.

One thing that I haven't seen mentioned in this thread is whether the AP917 card you bought has the correct firmware on it for the "Smart-ups"...it could be wrong and have firmware on it for another family of UPS such as the three phase Symmetra model. If you get signs of life from the card when plugged into the smart slot you can go into the back of the UPS's serial port (DB-9 connector) using the APC cable 940-0024C and using hyperterminal at 2400 baud 8,N, 1 and see what comes up. When you hit enter you will get a "login" prompt. The id/password might be still the factory "apc" "apc" , if not follow the instructions on the APC knowledge base to reset it to factory ID/password (which is basically to push and hold the reset button when you are at the Login prompt....or for newer firmware cards you push the reset button once, and then once the status led starts flashing you push reset again and wait for the status led to come back on solid (30 -45 seconds). Once you are logged in, the the first things that should show is what the operating system ("AOS") firmware module is, and what the "application" module is which should read as being for the "Smart-ups" . Anything else will cause unpredictable results!

In the very first post, I did try to connect using a serial cable but
The UPS never got to the point in it's self-test where I could continue.
The borrowed 9617 card let the UPS complete self-test and the serial cable
was then active.
I am just going to toss the card as the seller refunded my the $19.00 I paid,
which was an unexpected turn of events.
