EcoStruxure Control Expert V14 (Unity Pro V14)

There are a number of differences between Unity Pro and Control Expert (CEV14) and it is important for users to understand this.

1. The way the software is activated or authorised:
   • Unity pro uses an authorisation technique which requires a serial number the product part number and authorisation tool which generates some codes which are used by the authoriation web site server to generate an authorisation code.   The code is entered into the authorisation tool and the software is now permanently authorised for use.   (subject to hardware failure or software corruption).
   • Control expert uses an activation code and a license manager application.  On installation of the software Control expert enters as a trial version in the license manager.  To make it permanently activated the code is registered via the software license portal and automatically updates the software in the license manager or provides an XML file that can be copied to the programming tool and allows the user to update the activation.
   • Registration of control expert is not compulsory it should be however it has many advantages.  
     • Via the software license portal you can now manage your software licenses.
     • it means that you can update an manage contact information which is the most difficult process for our current system.
     • it will also confirm ownership of the license rights and in the case of a hardware crash provide evidence of ownership and a means to recover licenses.
     • Recently I experienced a corruption of my drive and it meant that my activation was no longer permanent.  Within the license manager there is a mechanism to repair the license, it required a connection the Software license portal however it meant I had my system up and running in an hour rather than a couple of days.
2. New licenses 
   • Safety license
     • CEV14 on installation will install a safety module.  During the trial period (see below) this module is unlocked and can be used for both the L (large) and the XL (extra large) versions.  
     • upon activation of the standard XL or L version safety is no longer available.
     • an additional activation is required to unlock the safety portion of the software.  
     • the advantage is that everyone can have the appropriate level of CEV14 however only those who require safety programming need the additional activation.
     • In unity pro we had a complete different package called XLS, which was effectively the XL version plus safety.  We now have the advantage that if you are using the low end M580 safety hardware you can use a large only version.
   • CEV14 introduces two floating licenses.  A 3 user floating license and a 10 user floating license.  This allows the customer to install the licenses on a license server and the client machines and users can connect to the server and book out and book in the licenses as needed.  
     
     Floating licenses differ to the traditional Unity Pro single or multi-user license in two ways:
     • The that traditional (also known as a node locked license) is dedicated to a machine, a floating license is usually set up for a temporary loan to a machine however it is possible to create a permanent loan.  There is a transfer process  to move a node locked license to another machine similar to unity pro. 
       
       In addition to this the new licensing will only allow the installation of one node locked license per machine.  For customers wanting to use terminal services you must use a floating license.
       
       
     • The second difference is the price, the floating license is more expensive.  In CEV15 there will be a part available that allows a user to upgrade (i.e. change from one license type to another) from a node locked multi-user license to a similar sized multi-user floating license.
        
   • CEV14 introduces an enterprise license  A step up from the site license which is limited to 100 users the enterprise version gives an unlimited license count.
     
     
   • CEV14 is a dedicated version which means that if you wish to update (i.e. go from one version to the next) there will be a cost.  Unlike unity pro each version has its own activation code so it is no longer possible to install the new version over the top of the current version and inherit the authorisation.
3. Trial versions
   • Control expert now installs as a fully featured trial version which runs for 30 days not 21 days as does Unity pro.
   • Unity Pro has a specific part number for an XL trial version, which has a 60 day run time.  At the moment this is not available in CEV14.

From the user point of view, the graphical user interfaces are still identical between EcoStruxure Control Expert and Unity Pro.

Hello @Trinxs1 I have a customer that currently has the following Unity Pro license: UNYSPUEFFV1X (see screenshot below). They are upgrading to Control Expert and need the equivalent Control Expert license. From my review of the documentation, it looks like they need the following: CEXSPUCZXEPBZZ . Is this correct or are there other questions I need to ask my customer to confirm the correct part.

Craig the unity part number you provided refers to a facility license.

There are two equivalent offers.  It will depend on the customer requirements.  The node locked version is a license dedicated to a single machine.  A floating license means licenses are shared from one or more license servers and a license can only be used by one client at a time.  If you have 15 people who need to use the software the floating license server must have at least 15 licenses hosted on the server.

In this regard the customer may choose to go for a smaller number of floating licenses.  I have included a 10-user floating license as well which the customer may wish to buy 1 or 2 licenses.  Based on our local pricing the cost-effective way to purchase floating licenses is to buy 10, 20 or 100 licenses.  customer may choose to buy 10, 20 or 100 floating licenses.  In this case the quantity levels that are cost effective will depend on the local pricing of the offers in your country.  

In our country we also sell a customer first agreement with each license sold.  This provides the customer with automatic access to any new update during the period of the customer first agreement.

Hi @Trinxs1 - Thank you so much for the detailed reply. Everything you said makes sense. I believe they are looking for the floating license. Just to clarify, if it is more cost effective, the customer only needs 20 users, they could purchase two CEXSPUCZXTPBZZ and "stack" them together? I would assume that's what you meant when you said they could buy 2 licenses to get the 20, correct? That would make sense because based on the pricing I see, if they need 30 users, it would make more sense to purchase the 100 (CEXSPUCZXEPBZZ)

I confirm that you can add multiple activations to one server.  e.g. you can activate 2 x 10 user floating licenses to a floating license server.  When you purchase 2 x 10 user licenses you have the option of allocating from 1 to 20 licenses to that server.  The first would be associated with one license and the second 10 from the second license.

Just make sure that the owner registers both licenses.
