PQ Event Auto Reporting from PME.

All:

I’m looking for some support here. I have a customer and they are looking at this product to evaluate the down time through an event. Yea I know PME will do this when you go and open everything up to view the outage on multiple meters and compare the multiple services and main primary incoming.

Customer wants this information generated as a direct report to them through the outage and recovery time, to power back on. The I-sense does this natively.

Sampling time on our meters is not a problem we’ll get that as an event, and restoration will come through too. The ability to auto report that event is the issue. Any thoughts? We can provide UPS power to the meter power supply so we can keep the meters 100% active through an event, and the software is on the server that is also protected by the UPS (backed up by a generator too).

Our (Votaw’s) owner is recommending the I-sense as an option, so if you guys that live in the power quality world (more so than we do in the power distribution contracting world), any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

FYI, this query is being tied to the single phase protection project we have been working on with your Nulec recloser and PME so we do have some options for capturing all the information customer is looking for with what we have installed and installing in the near future. (Trent we are still looking for support for developing a driver for this application).

Hi Paul,

It's definitely a problem when Allen Bradley, who can't spell "PQ", has a clean solution like this.

It was a smart move on their part to brand label something that makes getting PQ information easy.

You can see a sample of the email that is sent from the i-Sense.   Their pitch being "no software to install".
https://www.igrid.com/igrid/GridAlertInfo.jsp

Some thoughts:
You can set up an Alert Module within a PM8000 to send out an email on an alarm.
I think we can get pretty close to the format of the i-Sense 'simple email' with the functionality of the PM8000.

PLUS........
Voltage Sag capture is important, but what if the source of the voltage sag is something inside the facility? i-Sense doesn't do Disturbance Direction Detection
If you're going to spend money to buy and install a device to monitor PQ wouldn't you also want it to do MORE than just monitor PQ? (ie all the things a METER can do)
- alert on low Power Factor, high Harmonics, phase loss.
- track/confirm energy use, peak Demand
- allocate energy use to a production shift and per widget to spot waste and better manage costs.

And all that is WITHOUT adding software, which once they see they should fall in love with vs what they're NOT getting with i-Sense.
Or talk to Trent about adding a subscription for the PQ Report.

Still, I'd promote the PM8000 as the better PQ solution and use ION Frameworks to closely match the content i-Sense sends out.

I'd even ask the Expert Community help getting  "meter mail" to copy this:

Hi Juan and Paul,

Agree with all the advice given by the Square D person too. I see the response to iGrid can be at three levels, depending on the budget.

Level 1 -  PM8000 only: no software, generate PQ alert and send notification straight from the meter (promote additional DDD, energy measurements etc, beyond strict PQ)

Level 2 - PM8000 + PME: PME value, notification from PQ report (promote all the great benefits of adding PME)

Level 3 - PM8000 + PME + PQAdvisor: Level 2 + PQ dashboards (adds a bit of complexity but great value)

Clearly, we've got many customers who use our solutions for facility PQ event alarms and reports today, and any of these three should be better than iGrid!

Hi Paul,

Something you may be interested in is our Xpert System Diagnostics package for PME which includes an Extended Alarm History Report. The report allows detailed filtering so you can focus only on the events you are interested in and also specifically include just the information you want to be notified on. In addition to this the report supports direct notification on exception only (i.e. only notify when certain criteria are met).

Have a look at the links above for more information and let me know if you have any questions or would like a trial.

Cheers,

Brad.

Hi Paul,

On top of what the PQ expert from Square D told you which I agee 100%, you can add something like this to the application:

[PME8][TVD] How Can I Use Smart Notifications to Detect Changes That Could Impact My Facility?

also, Ram Kaushik maybe an opportunity here for PQ Advisor?

Cheers,

Juan
