We are a new integrator. I have found the ION reference document here in the exchange and downloaded. Are there 'meter specific' technical guides as well, for say the ION 7650, Power Logic meters, etc. somewhere on the exchange for download as well? Thanks

Hi Scott
I took a look in the demo kit document to get a clearer idea of the Ethernet communications. Basically, the Ethernet communications looks like this:
This means that in order to communicate with the PM5560, you need to create an Ethernet gateway site in ION Setup. The gateway site will have the IP address of the PM8240, and port 502 (Modbus). You then add the PM5560 as a device on that site, using the unit ID of the PM5560's RS-485 comm port -- that part is a bit of a guess as I'm not as familiar with Modbus gateway over Ethernet -- it is usually used for getting an Ethernet device to provide gateway communications for serial devices.
You should also be able to set up Ethernet gateway to serial. According to the demo kit document, the serial communications look like this:
So you can access the PM5560 by setting up a Modbus gateway through the ION7650 COM2 port. To do this in ION Setup is a two-parter:
1) Go to your ION7650 COM 2 serial tab. Set the protocol to be Modbus Master. Go to the ION7650 TCP/IP screen and set the Modbus Gateway to be COM2.
2) Create a new site with the IP address of the ION7650, port 502 (Modbus). Add the PM5560 as a device to that site.
Hopefully something in here is helpful. Good luck!
Cheers,
Alana

Hi Scott.
Great to see a new partner on the Exchange. The best place for a partner to find technical guides for the meters would be on the Schneider Electric site, www.schneider-electric.com.
Personally I use the global site (not country specific) and then type in the meter in the search.
Hope that helps!
Adam

Hi Scott
There are also the sales enablement kits, which have links to the related documents and general information about the meters for several of our meter lines (courtesy of Sam Gaib). You can access the sales enablement kits here:

Adam and/or Alana,
I'm training at this time. In particular I cannot seem to locate specific PM5560 info. There was a non-functioning file link in a sales package on schneider-electric site...otherwise, no hits on my search criteria. I'm working with a sales demo box right now, acclamating to PME8 and IONSetup . The box I'm networking with is the same type used in Lavergne (ION7650, PM8240, and PM5560) training, and I cannot get the PM5560 meter to communicate with the ION Setup app. I do have the other 2 meters communicating fine. My addressing on the 5560 has been verified as entered correctly by other than myself - it just won't talk to IONSetup. Standalone, the meter is fine. What bothers me is that this is an ethernet connection to the (properly communicating) PM8240. I did notice that the 5560 automatically configs to port 502 (Modbus?) when I select the meter type. I do change that to 7700. Doesn't work either way.
Now while I'm on the subject......I just tried to run * the web app in PME * and just received "Cannot locate core services" rejection. I've looked in the PME user guide, design guide, install guide, web app guide, and SQL instructions and see nothing to address this message. Any idea what is triggering this? My PME installation went smoothly (I thought). Didn't encounter any flak during the install.
Thanks

Hi Scott
A couple things to try in ION Setup.
Make sure you have the latest version. You can get the latest version of ION Setup here:
https://schneider-electric.app.box.com/ionsetuplatest
You need to enter the unit ID of your PM5560 into the Ethernet connection dialog box. This is the same as the unit ID for the meter's RS-485 serial connection.
You do need to be on port 502 (7700 is for ION architecture devices only like the PM8xxx or ION7650).
Try to connect to the device using the webpages (enter the ip address into a browser) to check if there are any strange settings. You can also check your subnet mask and gateway settings.
Also - ION Setup doesn't like to work wirelessly or across different locations. Are you on a hardwired connection to your meter?
Hopefully one of these might help.
cheers,
Alana

Hi Alana
I did get my IONSetup from that link, so we r good there. I will try your suggestions and I now understand the 502- thanks for clarifying. We are hard wired, no wireless. I probably won't get back to this til Thursday as I'm a bit swamped right now. You and Adam have been extremely helpful. Thanks for putting up with my growing pains, but we'll get there. Have a great day and thanks again!

Hi Alana,
Thanks very much for this information. I will be back in the office tomorrow and will try this out. I'll be sure to let you know the results. Thanks again for the excellent support, it is greatly appreciated!
Have a great day!

Hi Alana,
Based on the ether connection of the 5560 to the 8240, with the 8240 then being the *gateway* (site) to the network via the uplink port, I believe I have done that correctly now thanks to your clarification - I'm getting info now. I didn’t grasp that the 8240 would need to be a site as well as a device. This makes more sense with the ION Setup schematic view graphic as well, which was also bothering me.
One more question, am I correct in the assumption that the MB protocol is being packaged in TCP/IP protocol by using the 502 port? Just want to make sure I understand....Thanks very much for all your help.

Hi Scott
Yay -- glad you got communications working.
Yes, you are absolutely correct -- Modbus information being gatewayed back is wrapped in a TCP/IP wrapper. (I validated this with our incredibly knowledgeable and awesomely helpful tech support). Basically the TCP/IP wrapper is taken off when the Modbus information is sent downstream, and the wrapper is reapplied when it comes back out through the gateway.
cheers,
Alana

Hi Alana ,
Are you part of tech support? I hope I was not infringing on your duties with the issues you helped me straighten out. Should I be contacting someone else with stuff like this?
I'm not back in the office til next week and do have a PME Mgmnt Console question or 2 now, kind of the same thing as before.
Other than that, enjoying the learning process for Schneider power monitoring, and I think you guys really provide a great asset with the exchange community. I am digging in deeper to it all the time. There's a lot there.
You've all been very helpful- thank you.

Hi Scott
I am in the Technical Publications group, the folks who write the install sheets and user manuals for the meters. As part of our role, we work with and use the meters as customers would so we can (hopefully) document the information appropriately. We also monitor the Exchange to get an idea of where customer/users have issues and where we can provide some assistance. If you do have any feedback or comments around the technical documentation please let me know (my direct email is alana.clarke@schneider-electric.com).
In terms of when to use the Exchange forum vs a tech support call, the Exchange is intended to be an informal, high-level quick question/response area. If it is a very technical, in-depth question or it isn't getting any response on the the Exchange, that would be the time to make a call in to Technical Support.
If you have questions regarding PME Management console, you might want to direct your questions more towards the Software (PME) area of the Exchange community to help make sure that the appropriate experts will see your questions.
cheers,
Alana
