IEC 61850 in 10 MB ION 7650

Hi,

According to the datasheet of ION7650, only 5MB ION7650 meters can contain the IEC61850 protocol. However, according to the "IEC61850 and IONTechnology" document, "for meters with firmware earlier than v400, upgrading a 10 MB meter with IEC 61850 firmware will reduce the logging memory to 5 MB".

Does that mean that if the meter has firmware v400 and above, 10MB ION7650 meters can have the IEC61850 protocol (without reducing logging memory to 5MB)?

The implementation of IEC61850 required us to sacrifice some logging memory on the old ION7650 platform as we didn't have the sufficient flash storage to allow us to implement the feature.  Devices which only previously had 5 MB memory still had 5 MB of unallocated flash still so those models which upgraded could use the unused 5 MB for IEC61850 but those that had all 10 MB allocated for log storage had to be reduced to add IEC61850.

All IEC61850 firmware for ION7650 will only have 5 MB of available logging memory.  Switching to a non-IEC1850 firmware will allow you to have 10 MB of logging memory again if you purchased it with 10 MB in the first place.

Please find below release note description of ION7650 V400 and above.

V400 is a general firmware release that adds support for new metering hardware. In addition this firmware release reduces the 7x50e and 7x50s variants into one allowing for IEC61850 and 10Meg of logging memory to occur upon the same device. V400 adds compatibility for the -05 hardware revision option. This can be found as the last two digits of a meters serial number. V400 will NOT be compatible with previous versions of hardware ( -04 or earlier). In addition previous firmware revisions (pre V400) will not be compatible with the -05 hardware. We have consolidated the e (IEC61850) and s (standard) variants into one release. This means ALL devices ordered with V400 will now contain IEC61850 functionality as well as contain the 10M logging memory. Both features can be implemented in frameworks simultaneously. NOTE: To support the new features in v400, download the latest version of ION Setup from the website.
