Will This Setup Work? ESP32 to Schneider Electric PLC via Modbus TCP

Hello everyone,

I’m planning to work on a project involving an ESP32, a Schneider Electric PLC, and an HMI panel. The setup involves the following:

1. ESP32 connected to a sensor, transmitting data using Modbus TCP.
2. Schneider Electric PLC receiving data from the ESP32 and storing it in internal registers (e.g., %MW).
3. HMI displaying data read from the PLC registers.

The network would be configured as follows:

• A local router acts as the communication hub.
• ESP32 connects via WiFi, while the PLC is connected to the router via Ethernet.
• All devices, including the HMI, are in the same local subnet.

My Questions:

1. Does this architecture seem viable?
2. Are there any specific pitfalls I should watch out for when configuring Modbus TCP on both the ESP32 and the PLC?
3. Has anyone worked with a similar setup using Schneider Electric equipment and encountered issues I should be aware of?

I want to ensure everything is configured properly before diving into implementation. Any advice or suggestions would be highly appreciated!

Hi, I have done a ModbusTCP/RTU gateway with Pi Pico using CircuitPy which I find has good MB support libraries available. Note that the ESP in your case should be ModbusTCP slave with the PLC polling it as the MB Master.

Hi everybody,

I work on a project for my students. I have a reduced robot controlled by an esp32 , is it possible to make it communicate with an M221 in modbus TCP directly by wiring ? (no hub )
