Long distance SFP module for M580 Hot Standby

I have a customer need for a separation of two M580 hot standby CPUs of at least 13 miles (21 km).  Our standard single mode fiber SFP module has a range of 15 km, or 9.3 miles.  Has anyone tested any high power SFP modules for single mode fiber that have a distance rating of 30-40 km?

While SFP modules are built around a standard, that doesn't mean they are all compatible with all hardware, and so need to be tested.

Hello @JerryBartlemay

You know that the validated architectures are those we offer through documents "Modicon M580 Hot
Standby - System Planning Guide for Frequently Used Architectures" or "Modicon M580 Complex Topologies, System Guide", and in none of them we have an example with fiber to single-mode converters to reach these distances that you mention. If this were the case, they would be detrimental to CPU performance since the cycle times of the MAST/FAST tasks would have to be adjusted to ensure data synchronization, as indicated in the FAQ

Contact the EcoStruxure Competence Center internally for advice on this project, they may have already studied it.

Good luck!

Ricard

Thank you, Ricard.

I have done so, and the consensus is that as long as there is no other traffic involved, a media converter or even a dedicated switch should not impact the performance.  Media converters add no delay time as there is no message processing; just an electrical signal conversion.  A dedicated switch with no analysis or filtering properties set can also act as a media converter.  We will be testing this with the customer's standard switches shortly.

For all the people who may read this, any architecture that is out of the standard, must be contacted by Schneider for validation.
In our case, Jerry and me have colleagues who help us with validation and support.

Please, don't take these comments for the realization of this type of architecture, thank you.
