Maximum number of devices on Com'X 510

Hello,

I have a client that is interested in a very low cost monitoring solution for up to 40 remote sites. I was thinking about implementing the system with a iEM3155 meter on each sited paired with a Link 150 gateway.

The client already has an Ethernet network through their locations. All of the Link 150 gateways would report to a Coom'X 510 Energy Server.

Is this topology addecuate? If so, how many devices/gateways can be connected to a Com'X 510?

Hope you are doing well. The architecture you described does sound adequate. The Com'X510 supports up to 64 devices (including gateways).

I've had a similar case where we had to take back the Com'X because we've told the customer that the device supported up to 64 devices. Because that's how you would read the datasheet. But this is not the case. The Com'X supports up to 32 serial devices and 32 TCP devices. Not 64 TCP devices. When my customer got to more than 40 TCP devices the Com'x started acting weird.

I exchanged the Com'X with a HomeLynk and got around the limit of 10 Modbus devices (limit in the HomeLynk firmware) by creating a script for getting the values instead of the native modbus interface.

Colton Peltier​ - I have similar questions in regards to PowerTag and Smartlink.

Each Smartlink regardless of SI-D or SI-B, can monitor upto 20 PowerTag each.

So if Com'X 510 can handle upto 32 TCP devices, does that mean I can monitor and datalog measurements from 32x Smartlinks with 20 PowerTag each meaning 640 Modbus devices.

Or is the Local ID configuration is limited to 247 numbers only, which means I can only have 12-13 Smartlinks with upto 247 PowerTag max.

It will be great to confirm this? Thank you.

As I understand it, one PowerTag is to be seen as one modbus device. So one Com'X can handle 32 PowerTags.

Hi Michael Johansen​ I doubt this is the case. This will be the underestimation of Com'X capabilities if I am not wrong.

Not tried... but I think the power tag is a Modbus slave to a TCP (gateway) device, if one gateway had 20 powertags connected.

I would suspect you could add another TCP (gateway), with a max of only 12 power tags

Further to this topic, the published documentation is inconsistent on the number of serial devices a COM'X will support electrically and in the software.  Some technical documents state 32 RS485 serial devices whilst a FAQ and the document Com'X 200/210/510 Metering and Data Acquisition System Installation Guide gives a limit of 20 serial devices

2. The instruction sheet 5406AD002-04, says 32 devices total

Please confirm:

1. The maximum number of serial devices that can be connected directly to the RS485 port without the use of RS485 repeaters.
2. The maximum number of serial devices that can be configured using the latest Com'X510 firmware.
3. The maximum number of Ethernet devices that can be configured using the latest Com'X510 firmware.

The documentation states up to 20 serial devices and  a total of 64 devices per Com X. Modbus rules stipulate a maximum of 32 serial devices including the modbus master but in practice it would be better to limit this to 20, depending on number of topics polled.  The absolute maximum number of devices into one COm X is 64, including all gateways. 

I have an application with 60 serial modbus meters coming back to one com’x, using 2 Link 150’s. So thats a total of 63 devices, which is within these limitations.
