delayed return to normal messages...

Is there a reason why I'm receiving these RTN messages so long after the event time?

Hi John,

Are all e-mails / thresholds doing this or only specific ones? Was this a one time issue or does it always happen? Do you see any delay in the initial alarm? What version of DCE are you running?

Assuming there is no scheduling anomalies in the action, If it's a manual threshold, there is an option to create a return to normal delay .  Although this should delay the return as well as the e-mail, it's something I'd suggest checking. Check the times configuration on the device itself as well as the server. I believe both come from the server but I'd have to test to be sure,

You may also want to test this with a new alarm action and new profile. Create an alarm action that replicates the one you're using for to and from addresses etc. Create a new policy and associate the alarm and policy. I would then suggest creating a manual threshold. Associate the policy with this threshold. If it's a high temperature threshold, you can easily change the threshold from above the value to below the value. This will trigger the threshold. Verify the e-mail is sent and received. You can run a packet capture if you want to verify the server is actually trying to send.

After you verify you've received the mail and how long it took, change the threshold to be within spec again to and verify the alarm goes away. Again, check for the e-mail and see if it is sent and received. For each of these e-mails, please verify the time you changes the threshold and the time the e-mail was received. Are you seeing the same issue?

It could be that the SMTP server was unreachable and DCE kept trying to send, I can't say. Hopefully the testing will show something. I am also not able to fully replicate your issue. My e-mail does delay maybe a minute or so but not 2 hours and 19 minutes.

Steve
