Will EcoStruxure Data Center Expert 8.1.1 work with 8.1 client?

We are planning on upgrading our EcoStruxure Data Center Expert server to 8.1.1.  We were previously planning on upgrading to 8.1 and rolled out the 8.1 client to our user workstations.  Will the 8.1 client work with the new 8.1.1 server or is there a new 8.1.1 client that needs to be used with the 8.1.1 server.

Also, is there a separate download for the 8.1.1 client besides downloading it from an upgraded 8.1.1 server?

Hello @dhamamoto,

Each version of Data Center Expert has its own corresponding client.  Client downloads can either be done from the server after upgrade or downloaded from the VM/Upgrade download pages.

Here is a link to the 8.1.1. VM page and at the very bottom is the Windows Client Install: https://download.struxureon.com/dce/VM/811/index.html

If you have access to upgrades within the EcoStruxure IT Entitlements portal, you can navigate to the upgrade link for your server in there and obtain the download link for the client as well.  If you do not have access to upgrades within the portal, reach out to technical support to have your software support contracts verified and access provided.

Kind Regards,

Cory

Cory,  While I was waiting for a reply I upgraded a clone of our 8.0 server to 8.1.1 and was able to connect with the 8.1 client instead of the newer 8.1.1.  Is there an issue accessing the 8.1.1 server with a 8.1 client?  We have already deployed the 8.1 client to prepare a 8.0 > 8.1 upgrade before 8.1.1 was released and would prefer not to have to install the 8.1.1 client on all of the user workstations.

Hi @dhamamoto ,

I would go with @Cory_McDonald s  response as with almost all versions, the newer DCE version requires a matching client. I have noticed however that the 8.1.0 client does appear to work with the 8.1.1 server version. Most client versions won't allow you to connect to a different server version and will error stating that you must download the new client.  This is not a tested compatibility though and although it does appear to work, there could be minor inconsistencies when using mismatched versions. This one was an oversight and shouldn't be available in future revisions.

Thanks,
Steve

Hi @dhamamoto,

I would always recommend using the same client version as the server version (the one downloaded from the specific version page or from the servers web page.  This can prevent any errors and if a technical support issue ever arises within the client, the first step would be to install the matching version.

In this specific case of the 8.1 client vs. the 8.1.1 client, both "should" work, but I still recommend having the matching version in case there is ever an issue as that would be the first troubleshooting step by technical support.

Kind Regards,
Cory
