In the Capacity History report there is the option to run Server Quantity, what counts as a server on this report? Following on from that what is counted on the Total IT Assets report?
Am I correct is saying there are 33 different ci_type fields in the configuration_item database, if so are these used to calculate the amounts on the above reports?

From the Capacity History (KPI) description page it seems like "Server quantity" only takes rack mountable servers into the calculation, excluding blades. In order to add blades you'll need the ITO module and the "Total IT Assets" report.

VSales Christian Riis I had looked at the capacity page but it doesn't say what constitutes a server. Is it a rack mounted device that is not network equipment( So everything that is grey in the 3D model)? There is not a server ci_type in the configuration_item table which clouds the answer somewhat.

I have been looking at the "Server Quantity" option in the Capacity Report. From what I can see it includes
in the report.
The generic equipment needs to have a power property in order to be included in the report.
There is no way to verify the type of a genome before it is added to a rack. Then the type can be seen by mousing-over the asset.
If someone could verify the above findings and explain the difference between "Server Quantity" and "Total IT Assets" as James originally asked, I think that information should be added to the documentation.

*) Even though the Capacity History (KPI) Description page hints that it doesn't.

Thanks for the information Christian Riis. After filtering in the equipment browser for equipment type = generic and with a power supply I got the same number as the server quantities report.
If I then added blades to the filter it added up to the Total IT Assets report. So on my investigation it seems blades was the distinguishing feature. As you said it would be good to get verification
