Using APC Switches and configuring LAN2 on Vitual DCE

Hi,

We are planning a new setup where we have 5 nos. APC Switches (AP9224110) which will be cascaded and connected to an Ethernet Port on an IBM Server. This port will be configured for private connection (192.168.x.x) for a Virtual DCE Server 7.4.x to assign DHCP address for the peripheral devices.

Can anyone share the LAN2 Virtual DCE configuration document link and if any concerns in this setup.

Thanks & Regards

Shemil

Dear Shemil,

I have provided the following DCE Server requirements to one of the Customers. I am sharing the same to you. Secondly, you can find this info in the DCE Online document here.

Struxureware Data Center Expert version 7.2 is available in the form of Open Virtualization Archive (.ova file). This .OVA file can be loaded on a virtual server. VMware ESXi 4.1.0 was used as the reference virtualization platform during the development of the StruxureWare Data Center Expert 7.2.4 virtual appliance, and is the first supported virtualization platform. You can use  the latest VMware ESXi OS for this Installation.

Vmware Server Configuration for installing DCE software as Virtual Appliance:

  • 4 core CPU
  • 16 GB RAM
  • 100 GB storage minimum(Please refer the below additonal disk note. Recommended to install the DCE with 10 GB first, and then add the additional hard disk with required storage space)
  • 1 GBPS LAN
  • Additional network adapter to enable private networking(Optional if the Customer wants to enable the Private Networking)

 Network Requirements for DCE:

Customer must provide the MAC Address, IP Address, Subnet Mask and Default Gateway and hostname for StruxureWare Data Center Expert virtual appliance.

A unique MAC Address is required for StruxureWare Data Center Expert . If the MAC Address originally assigned to the virtual appliance is changed, an error will occur on the primary interface, and the virtual appliance will not start.

We can add one additional network adapter to enable private networking on DCE. You cannot

Remove a network adapter once it has been added.

Network Requirements :

If the Customer wants to enable the DCE Private Networking to assign DHCP IP address to the PDUs on Private network, the Vmware Server Host needs to have the secondary Network. In this case, all the PDUs LAN cables need to be connected to the LAN Switch and then they need to be connected the Physical Private Network Adapter on the VMware Server Host.

Procedure to add an additional network adapter on VM to enable Private Network:

You can add one additional network adapter to enable private networking. You cannot

remove a network adapter once it has been added.

1. Gracefully shut down the virtual appliance.

2. Select the StruxureWare Data Center Expert virtual appliance, and select the option

to edit the virtual machine settings.

3. Select the options to add an ethernet adapter.

4. Specify the type and the network connection. Ensure this connection is mapped correctly, particularly when the DHCP server will be enabled on the private network interface.

5. Power on the virtual appliance.

6. In the console view, login to the virtual appliance using apcsetup as the username

and password.

7. Within five seconds, press m to modify the settings.

8. Accept the settings you configured previously, or modify settings if needed.

9. Press y to accept the Enable private network interface option.

10. Specify whether you want to enable the DHCP server on the private network interface.

Minimum System Requirements StruxureWare Data Center Expert console:

The StruxureWare Data Center Expert console is a stand-alone Java application that runs on systems that meet the following

requirements:

• A PC with a 1-GHz or better AMD/Intel processor running Microsoft® Windows® 2003 Server (SP2), Microsoft

Windows XP (SP1,SP2 or SP3), Windows Vista, or Windows 7, Red Hat® Enterprise Linux® version 5.0

• At least 1 GB of RAM

• Screen resolution should be set to at least 1024 x 768.

• Supported browsers: Microsoft Internet Explorer® 8, 9,10; Mozilla® Firefox® 17.0; Google Chrome™ 23.0

Adding disk space to a virtual appliance:

To increase storage for the virtual appliance, you must create additional hard disks.
You cannot change the size of an existing hard disk, or remove a hard disk once it has been
created. An error will occur on the primary interface, and the StruxureWare Data Center
Expert virtual appliance will not start.
1. Gracefully shut down the virtual appliance.
2. In your virtual server console, select the option to add a hard disk.
3. Choose the hard disk size.
See StruxureWare Data Center Expert virtual server equivalent configurations.
4. Choose thin or thick provisioning.
5. Power on the virtual appliance.

I am also sharing the screen shots of the DCE software OVA file deployment on VMware ESXi as one of the VM guest. This is not an official document. Its just for your reference.

Regards,

Bala
