Is the battery waring based on the install date or % of the rated battery capacity?

Smart UPS normally performs the Self Test to check the battery health at Start up and every 14 days by default. The self-test process compares the battery voltage during a discharge to an internal bad-battery template – basically, it places a load on the battery and measures the voltage drop. If the drop is too large for the given load, then the voltage will be beneath the failure level and the self-test will fail.
The below K-base document has got more information on the battery warning or replace battery warning:

It is also normally recommended to replace the VRLA type battery if the battery is more than 3 years old.
