Server Access: what can it do?

Hi,

Is there any document to list this module's main features, so that I can know what it can do and what it cannot do? For example, Can I install operation system on a blank server remotely by using Server Access?

Thanks

Hi Brenda,

Server Access utilizes the power of baseboard management controllers of the servers. Most of the servers now a days offer the capability to install OS on a fresh machine by mapping Virtual DVD/ISO ROM. But in many cases server vendors some time lock this feature as an additional license fee like for HP ILO if you need to mount the OS remotely you need to have Advance ILO license.Through Server Access you can easily hit ILO Card but mapping of ISO to mount an Operating System will fall in the scope of ILO card and not Server Access.

However there are other options where through SSH as well the ILO Card boot up can be mapped but again mounting OS over network suffers from network delays in practical aspects, so common option utilized for the same is

  1. Mapping through SSH script (an example):

ssh to your ILO and type

    cd /map1/oemhp_vm/cddr/
    set oemhp_image=http://192.168.1.100/myiso.iso
    set oemhp_boot=connect
    reset /system1

The idea is to create a local server in each server room , each location which has the latest ISO images available at all times and whenever any new server is to be built the localized server can be used for the same thereby giving you much faster speeds and more stable connection.

Hi Brenda,

For general documentation on the server access module, please take a look at StruxureWare Data Center Operation: Server Access.

Most modern servers with out-of-band (OOB) management capabilities (e.g. with a BMC) will allow you to remotely install from a disk image. The Server Access module will allow you to discover and launch the server's OOB management interface. The interface (often an applet) is provided by the server vendor and embedded on the server, so what you can do from this interface depends entirely on the server make and model.

Regards,

Torben
