In DCE, one of the things you can change under "Device Scan Settings" is the Scan Interval. Is there a recommended setting for this? Should different devices have different Scan Interval settings so everything doesn't scan at the same time or does this matter? I also see a "Global Scan Setting" which is different then what we currently have set per device. Should these be the same?
Thanks,
Eddie

Hi Eddie,
It's all based on what you want to see. It's usually configured so that the global scan setting is what you feel is the frequency at which you'd like to see the data points. If the device is set to "default" for scan interval, it uses the global setting.
The more devices you have, especially if you're seeing slowness or other potential performance issues, it may be wise to increase the scan interval so that the server is not being taxed. In such a case, you may want to see more info on a few of the devices that you feel are more important.
If you're more worried about alerting for things like UPS on battery or overload on an APC device, that's what the option for Priority Scanning is for when you discover a device or edit it's scan settings. Non APC devices will not show up as alerting in DCE until they are scanned so if you have many devices that are not APC and are concerned with catching alerts from those devices, a shorter scan time is better.
Basically it's all about the environment and what you're looking to get out of it.
Steve.
