What can be done to control Humidity and Dewpoint in a data center? we are receiving alarms form Netbotz and the Sensor pods about Dewpoint and hunidity being too low? Do these sensors need calibration - this is a new data center build as of this year from Schneider - APC.

Hi Paul,
These sensors are calibrated at the factory and do not need to be calibrated. (KBase FA156109)
What are the actual values that the sensors are reporting?
How many Netbotz appliances are reporting this issue? Are they all in the same location? Have you tried to move the sensors to a different location?
What model of Netbotz do you have?
What model of temp/hum sensors are installed on the Netbotz appliance and sensor pods? How many?
On the sensors that are reporting this problem , are they connected to the unit itself or to the sensor pods? Have you tried to switch the temp sensors around i.e connecting a sensor that is reporting the issue directly to the unit and then the sensor pod?
What is the FW that is installed on the Netbotz? The latest FW available is Botzware 4.4
Do you have thresholds set up for these sensors? If so , what are the threshold values? You can increase the thresholds on this sensors for temp/hum if you wish through Advanced View.
When did you start to notice this issue?
Do you have another measuring device to calculate the humidity in the Data Center? If so, what is this apparatus reporting?
Is it possible to send a screenshot of the emails you are receiving from the Netbotz unit?
Regards,
Breda

Breda,
We are receiving both NetBotz and Sensor Pod warnings*
16% on Humidity levels and Dew PT around 26.2 F
-What model of Netbotz do you have?
*IDK - where can I get this info?
-What model of temp/hum sensors are installed on the Netbotz appliance and sensor pods? How many?
*IDK - where can I get this info?
-On the sensors that are reporting this problem , are they connected to the unit itself or to the sensor pods? Have you tried to switch the temp sensors around i.e connecting a sensor that is reporting the issue directly to the unit and then the sensor pod?
*IDK what you mean?
-What is the FW that is installed on the Netbotz? The latest FW available is Botzware 4.4
*We just had this unit installed this year and it should be on latest firmware but where can I check?
-Do you have thresholds set up for these sensors? If so , what are the threshold values? You can increase the thresholds on this sensors for temp/hum if you wish through Advanced View.
*They were default values and I made adjustments now to silence the alarms
-When did you start to notice this issue?
*Started when we had the units activated (JULY 2014) (DCE and DCO Servers) and setup to send alerts, so it probably existed all along
-Do you have another measuring device to calculate the humidity in the Data Center? If so, what is this apparatus reporting?
*We had our local Engineer check and he said Humidity seemed fine in the room

Hi Paul,
Thanks for the info. I can see that you have the latest FW installed on the appliance. The information on the Netbotz appliance is under the About screen in Advanced View. I also noticed that the temp/hum sensors is connected to the sensor pod. Are you able to directly connect the sensor to the appliance and see if its reporting the same values? Did you try and move the sensor to another location in the rack? Do you know if its only one sensor reporting these values or multiple sensors reporting these values? What is the temperature reporting? I want to try and isolate the issue to see if it is our sensor that is causing the problem or the values reporting back are actual true values from the DC.
I would not be concerned with the dew point as the humidity. ASHRAE standards are 40%-55% RH and the Netbotz sensor has a range of +/-4% between two sensors.
On the other measuring device are you getting the same values as our sensors located in the same position? If not, it may be a faulty sensor on our side.
What kind of cooling system do you have installed? What is the model number, do you know? Does it have a humidifier?
If your 3rd party measuring device is reporting back the same values as our sensors, I would invest in a humidifier (if you do not have any, or the cooling unit does not have one), to raise your RH% rather than mask the problem with adjusting the thresholds.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Breda

I sent this via email response but it looks to never go through: on 11/19/2014
Breda
Sorry for the delayed response but have been jammed up with other priorities as in the I.T. world.
There a multiple sensors on each rack (One Big one in the middle) and little ones on top and bottom
*Can you let me know what each monitors or the difference between the big and little sensors (Big one in the middle and the little ones on top and bottom)?
Regarding this:
Are you able to directly connect the sensor to the appliance and see if its reporting the same values? Did you try and move the sensor to another location in the rack? Do you know if its only one sensor reporting these values or multiple sensors reporting these values? What is the temperature reporting? I want to try and isolate the issue to see if it is our sensor that is causing the problem or the values reporting back are actual true values from the DC.
How would one directly connect the sensor to the appliance?
There are multiple sensors reporting these issues:
Here are a few examples and I have setup a third party sensor today at the middle level of the racks 2/3 (we have 4 racks) and they are currently reporting 73F / 12% Humidity – does not record dew
point
Our Humidity is low and do you have any recommendations for a Humidifier for a Datacenter with this equipment?
Thanks
Paul
