Hi Team!
We could not discover servers via IPMI protocol.
ITO trying to discover it, but get message "Unable to determine device vendor. Unable to determine device operating system. Unable to find unique serial number for device typeOMBmc - not saving. "
We have tried discovery for HP dl360 G5 (with iLo2) and IBM x3650 (with Remote Supervisor Adapter II Refresh 1). Both have the same error.
When we are polling it via SNMP the message is "SNMP - Successfully connected. Unable to determine device vendor. Unable to determine device operating system."
Any suggestions?

Hello Valentin IPMI discoveries will always state there is no device vendor or operating system because ITO does not collect that info during IPMI discovery. However when you see the message "unable to find unique serial number" that means the device you're attempting to discover is not returning a device serial number or asset tag number. ITO stores discovered info based on serial number/asset tag number so if that value is blank the device will not discover. From your ITO server, if you open a browser and browse to http://localhost:8688/DataCenterManager the DCM GUI should appear. Are the IP's/assets you're trying to discover present in this view on the right side list? Depending on your site you'll either see IP addresses or management card hostnames there. If they are present, if you select on there's a details pane in the bottom middle section ... look at the details there to see if the device shows a serial number or asset tag value. I suspect if its there its blank. First suggestions... make sure serial number/asset tag is set in the server BIOS as that is typically where this data comes from. Also, make sure your system BIOS, and management card firmware is relatively new ... preferably 2014/2015 or newer versions ... the models you describe above a somewhat old so they could have old IPMI firmware. The IPMI credentials you're using should also have administrator access to your management cards (ILO or IMM). Regards Greg Sterling does not return device model and OS information which is why the discovery

From memory wasn't there a cut off point on the firmware of iLO2 where one revision allowed ITO to work while an earlier one didn't?

Thank you guys! Is there info what versions of management cards/vendors and firmware versions are supported by ITO. Or we need to check it one-by-one on real servers? It is a real problem to test it in production environment.

ILO2's should work if they are running recent firmware. I have ILO2's which are discover-able in our lab. My ILO's are running firmware version 2.29 from 7/16/2015. We do not have a list of supported firmware versions. For newer management cards there may be frequent releases. If the firmware version is 2015 or newer it should work as long as the server hardware is supported. This is the current list of devices which Intel states they support with IPMI discovery. Most of these models should work from ITO if their firmware is up to date, the IPMI credential info is properly set and the management card returns a valid serial number during discovery. http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/software/dcm-supported-servers.html Regards Greg Sterling

Greg Sterling Has the new version of ITO permitted discoveries of devices via IPMI with a read-only user account or is admin still required?

Hi Greg
I am having a similar issue. We are trying to discover Wintel servers via WMI and we get the error " WMI - Successfully connected. Unable to determine device vendor. Hyper V guest encounterd, not saving device" The servers are in a multi-domain environment and i have the necessary account credential rights i.e. local admin rights and Distributed COM users" however i am still unable to discover these servers.
Any suggestions?

Yes. ITO should be used to discover physical servers not virtual servers. If ITO discovers a guest server (like VMware, Hyper-V, VirtualBox and so on) it will "skip" the device noting its a guest.

Thank you for your speedy response. So as a point of clarity, the error is referring to a VM server?
Also, i forget to mention i receive this error aswell " WMI - Unable to connect. " Ensure the service is running and verify credentials"
I have confirmed WMI is started and the credential has the local admin rights and Distributed COM users" are there any other rights that i should be adding ?
Once again thank you for your assistance.
