How do I view the DDF associated with a specific non-apc SNMP device?

The DDF catalog does not contain specific hardware that I am using, despite requests as far back as 2 years ago.

Example : Eaton 9395 UPS

There are several other Eaton DDFs that the system could be using with my 9395, and the system could also just be ignoring them all in favor of the bare rfc 1628. I haven't been able to find the mechanism by which to view this critically important information.

This comes up because of a fairly recent outage I suffered where the UPS alarmed, but Struxureware did not. Since I have Struxureware, I don't configure all of my individual UPS' to page me.... So... I had a critical issue with no alarming.

Can anyone assist?

Remember - it is irrelevant that I am working with an Eaton, that is for specific example purposes.

I don't think you can without going into the specific software code. But I use two for Eaton "Eaton 9390" and " Eaton Powerware UPS". Also on mine you have to telnet into the UPS and add the strings and IP address in order for DCE to pull it in.

Hi Eric,

Sorry to hear that your DDF request was not fulfilled.  If you have a ticket number, I can look into it.  Or, you can create another request at https://ddf.ecostruxureit.com/, please be sure to include the MIB and a walk file with the request.  There is a better process in place than in the past.  It still may take some time, but it won't be ignored or lost.

Thanks,

Jake

But how do you know that DCE is using either of those DDFs if there is no way to check?

I have both of those DDFs, 9390 and Powerware, as well as one other for Eaton. Just no clue what they contain or if they are in use.

My 9395 has a 'Power Xpert Gateway Card"

The Model coming from the ups in the standard MIB is, "PXGX + UPS Eaton 9395 Single UPS without SBM" - and I wonder, how to APC align a DDF with a device? does the Model or some other RFC1628 field have to match a field in the DDF? If that were the case, then mine doesn't match anything and won't have a DDF.

As i tried different ddf's i would check which device sensors were being pulled.

i right click on the unit and select "View Device Sensors".

There is logic in each DDF which determines if the DDF will be used or not.  It often uses the sysObjectID, but not always and not always only that.  Unfortunately, there is no easy way to see which DDF(s) are being used by a device, nor are you able to export DDFs to inspect them.  If you create a request from the DDF request page, upload a walk of the device, and describe the problem you are having, someone will be able to help you sort it out.

If you are seeing the device, but it has no sensors, this means DCE can communicate over SNMP, but there is no DDF for it.  If the device doesn't get added after attempting to discover it, then DCE is unable to communicate with it over SNMP.

Hi Jake,

"nor are you able to export DDFs to inspect them."

Can you not take a backup of the config and then inspect the backup file. I've been able to pull DDF's from a backup file to install on a new server when doing a migration from a failed DCE server to a new one when i had not setup the original and wanted an easy way to get the DDFs off the old machine without having to search what DDFs had originally been installed.

Hi Alastair,

Good point.  There are ways to get DDFs off of an installation.  For help with that, please contact your local tech support.  Please keep in mind, there is no documentation or support for editing the DDFs directly, so I wouldn't encourage that.

To continue this...

When I use the APC/Schneider walk tool, I find this list of particularly interesting OIDs (this is a convenient snip, not an exhaustive list of everything that should be included in a complete and useful DDF). Some of these might be available, but I cannot be sure, and certainly not all of them are available.

I included a screenshot further below of my options under, "other state sensors"  - none of these would appear to be numeric sensors....

Some of these are no doubt covered in the "sensors" - but who could tell? since the OIDs aren't listed in Struxureware....

Eaton 9395 with a Power Xpert Gateway Card running current software. I'll try to open a DDF request.

Hi Eric,

Those OIDs are part of Eaton's alarm table.  Therefore, they would be implemented as alarms in DCE and not as sensors.  I did a quick check and they should be present in the Powerchain DDF.  If they aren't working on that DDF or you need them added to another, please file a request.

Thanks,

Jake
