Is it possible to have a field that counts incrementally each time a new device is added to the db?
(On behalf of Pete Morris, asked as a comment in documentation Lighting Properties)

Hi Can you elaborate on the request? Not entirely sure what you mean by adding a new device to the db. Do you mean a field in Data Center Operation that counts up every time a new device is added in Data Center Expert? On another note: This question was original posted under Energy Efficiency under properties for Lighting. Those properties are very seldom used in a Energy Efficiency configuration since the properties are only used when no measurement are available and the power loss of the device is estimated based on the IT Load. The power loss for light in a data center is not often depended on the IT load and therefore should the power loss be scripted instead. But please elaborate on your request. Thanks in advance Jesper

Hi,
you were right in your summation of the question. However i think i posted in the wrong section, as i meant to ask about it in DCO rather than DCE.

Hi peter.e.morris The Community is both for DCE and DCO question, so you asked the question the right place. But I am not quite sure I understand your question. Please elaborate on your original question. Is it a field in DCO that counts up every time a new device is added? If this is the case what kind of devices should it count? Maybe you could give an example? Thanks Jesper

it should count every physical device, a bit like a asset field, but issued by the db, rather than typed in by a user. (maybe there is already a such field, but it is hidden, i don't know).

Where would you like this information to be shown? Is it a field on each device showing which number it is or is just one general number that counts up every time a device is added? It is not currently possible to do this in DCO, but I can add this a feature request. For this will I need to know in details who you like this feature to work. Thanks Jesper

Hi peter.e.morris
I have created a new feature request for your request. The feature request will now be evaluated by product management.
In the future are you also very welcome to create feature requests yourself. This can be done here
Thanks
Jesper

peter.e.morris Pete, are you looking for a unique ID, or does it have to be a incremental number?

i was looking for an incremental number, but i guess a unique ID could probably do the same job

Every asset in the solution has a Unique ID (which is hidden). Here is an example of such UUID: be982adf-02c9-4239-9925-4f45db99434b Is this usable for you? What is the use case? Why do you need to see this unique value or counter?

some fields don't have serial no.'s, some don't have ssystem names, almost every field has a blank somewhere (nothing to do with struxureware, but to do with the data we put in), so if we had a unique field which always had data in it every time, we can identify every item. In excel, i can just start at 1 and drag down to 5000 or 10000 or however many records and create a unique id in seconds. it is not possible to do this in struxureware (or i'm not aware of that capability if it is). So if a unique id already exists, then that might well be a way round it.

Pete, Starting with DCO 8.0, the mentioned UUID will be available through the new Web Service API released with DCO 8.0. I still don't understand why you need this unique ID (I understand not all assets have a serial number value) - can you please explain what you need it for?

we extract all the data and manipulate it using some vb programming. so if we have a unique id for every record, we know exactly where the data ends.

If you are using the ETL export database, the unique internal ID is available in a column named 'ci_id'.

Using the ETL export is easy - and well document on DCIM Support. You can start here: http://sxwhelpcenter.ecostruxureit.com/display/DCIMDEVELOPER/ETL+-+Extract+Transform+Load
