I have tested using DHCP and the APC devices do not require DNS, but curious if the APC devices are set to static, is DNS still optional? Thank you

Hi Jon,
It all depends on what you're doing. If the APC devices are on the DCE private LAN and communicate only with DCE by IP, then no, it is not critical to have DNS. If the devices are on either LAN but are configured to do anything with a hostname like send e-mail themselves (can do, even from private side) you need DNS on the device.
Basically if you want to do anything on the NMC that has anything to do with a hostname, you need to have that DNS info on the card. There may be other idiosyncrasies that I can't think of. Not sure it'd hurt to have it on the card though so why not?
Thanks,
Steve.

Hi Steve. I understood setting the hostname on the NMC was sufficient to have a meaningful name appear, e.g. in DCE GUI, e.g. via email alerts. Therefore setting up and maintaining a DNS on the APC Private LAN is not required. Can you confirm please.

Hi Ed,
DNS on DCE should be sufficient if you want hostnames for the devices to show up in DCE. Well, that and the proper DNS config for forward and reverse lookups. The only reason you should need DNS on the card is if the card itself is trying to communicate with other systems using hostnames.
