Data Centre Expert backup fails with Windows 7 as share

I ran into an issue with DCE 7.4.1 backing up to windows 7. The share would mount successfully. Access from DCE is successful as the directory structure and files are created/transferred into the shared folder. DCE would mount the share and start the backup but intermittently fail, never completing. See below resolution.

The Console showed the below:

CIFS VFS:Unexpected lookup errror -12

CIFS VFS: cifs_mount failed w/return code = -12

The DCE server logs showed:

10/13/16 16:12:17.579 ERRR - Backup Log: rsync: mkstemp "/data/mount/backup/backup_DCEStokeCC_20161013151356_7.4.1/data/local/sensor2/B83972A/B83972A_nbAlinkEnc_0/2015/.sensor.194.rL5HFg" failed: Cannot allocate memory (12)(com.netbotz.server.services.backup.impl.BackupJob)

The issue is because Windows 7 is not initially optimized as a file server and requires manual registry changes.

Applicable Registry key description:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters\size

Your choices for this registry key are 1, 2 and 3.

    1 = Minimize Memory Used

    2 = Balance

    3 = Maximize Throughput for File Sharing and Maximize

        Throughput for Network Applications

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SessionManager\MemoryManagement\LargeSystemCache

Your choices for this registry key are 0 and 1.

    1 = Maximize Throughput for File Sharing

    0 = Maximize Throughput for Network Applications

To apply the changes follow the below process:

Press the CTRL + ESC – type “regedit.exe” – press enter

Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters\size

Double click size and change hexadecimal value to 3

Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SessionManager\MemoryManagement\LargeSystemCache

Double click size and change hexadecimal value to 1

Reboot the Windows 7 system.
