Hi All,
I have a client that has a DCE VM v7.9.3 and they want to manage DCE Backups via their Back Up Department.
They want to install an Avamar Agent on the VM so that they can control the Backups. Previously the Backups were being done via the DCE Client via NFS Share.
Please advise if there is another way to Backup DCE apart from doing it via the DCE Client?
Any feedback will be much appreciated.

Hello @Tafadzwa,
Data Center Expert is considered a restricted appliance that can not have any changes made to the back-end (operating system), such as installing software or upgrading packages. The operating system and Data Center Expert code is maintained through software updates.
Backups for DCE must go through the Data Center Expert desktop client to be scheduled to either an NFS share or Windows Share. The customer can choose to do any external backups that they choose, such as Snapshots in VMWare ESXi and Checkpoints in Hyper-V. The only supported methods for backing up DCE is through the Desktop Client configuration for Windows Share or NFS Share.
Regards,
Cory

Would an agentless snapshot-based Avamar backup suffice?

Hello @RickBWell,
I do not have any experience with Avamar, but if it is an agentless backup, that would fall to the same category as VMware snapshots and Hyper-V checkpoints. They are backup options that often work, but they are not supported by the software itself or technical support and are not a replacement for configuring and running backups to occur through DCE to a Windows Share or NFS Share.
Kind Regards,
Cory

I understand what you are saying, but in the documentation for the 7.9.0 upgrade, it specifically mentions taking a snapshot (optional) of the VM in addition to taking the built-in backup so I thought it might be considered acceptable.
