The screen instances are locked so no Design Mode but on the template I can go into Design Mode but not toggle back out once in. I have to close the screen and open it again.
Also, is there a way to stay in the Geo SCADA Expert Forum when doing a search? After each search, the search box changes to back to All Community and the Exchange Community folder.

In the mimic object within a template you only have design mode. In any instance to get access to design mode you need to ensure there is a property override on the mimic object's content property, otherwise it will show the same what is in the template (which is what some users want who don't need custom mimics)
You can access property overrides from the Property Override option on the template object. Check the help if you need more detail on property overrides

But it should be noted that Property Override has other consequences than just 'allowing the Design Mode to be selected on Instance Mimics'.. like those Mimics will no longer follow the Template Mimic.
But I think it can be a bit confusing for new-comers to ClearSCADA / GeoSCADA Expert.
When in a template, there is no 'instance' so there's nothing to be in like the runtime mode of.
Likewise, when in a template instance where the Document Content property of the mimic is not overridden, it's design is locked to the template, so the Design Mode is unavailable.
It would be cool if there was a drop down in the Template Mimic to allow you to view a particular 'instance' of it.. but that seems like it would be really difficult to code up, and I think the return on investment would be minimal.

Ok, I guess I was on a screen that was not a template before when I've done this with the production system? It's still odd that the template screens opens in view mode and I can test buttons that open popups and such. I can then go into Design Mode but can't get back out.

You've likely just stumbled on a very trivial inconsistency 'bug'.
If it opens in View mode, then your user account likely doesn't have the tick box set for 'Double Click Edits Documents'
I'm not sure what 'correct' would be for this situation. I guess it's kind of correct as-is... your user account says double click shouldn't edit the document... so it doesn't (putting you in a somewhat invalid view mode). But when you go to edit mode, it doesn't let you return to the somewhat invalid view mode.

You have stumbled across a change which crept in, possibly after Geo SCADA 2014. I don't think template mimics could be put into view mode before, but now then can, and only on opening them. The question is - should we prevent this, so template mimics can only be opened in edit mode or not at all?

Oh, I don’t even have to close it and open it again. I can just double click on the screen object in the database tree. I just can’t use the Design Mode icon to do it.
Why would you not want to open them at all? I’d vote for being able to toggle them in and out of Design Mode. It would be nice to test how the screen template was working without having to create an instance and going and opening it up and going back and forth to see how changes you are making work. Not a big deal but it’s just data entry and the less jumping around and fewer mouse clicks the better. I’m sure the developers have bigger fish to fry. I’d rather see a simple search and replace implemented. It would save me so much clicking and typing. It would be cool to just select objects on the screen or even the Database tree and do a simple string search and replace.

@sbeadle I was pretty sure back in CS2013 days, it was possible to put Template Mimics into 'View Mode' (well to turn off Design Mode).
I personally would like this functionality. It can sometimes be annoying to have to find an instance of the mimic to test out some animation / script item.
