APC outside of the normal network

Having an APC Smart-ups connected to the main switch doesn't really provide a helpful set up when the main switch dies. You cannot tell if it is a power issue or a switch issue. I am looking for ideas on how to get the APC on to a separate network without having to buy another circuit. What unique solutions has anybody done to service remote locations that you just cannot hop in the car to go check on.
