i have a backups 1500 XS running with personal powerchute. i don't want the ups to shutdown the computer even when the battery is low. i see RUNTIME choices for how many minutes to wait before shutting down, but there is no way i see to disable or say "never". anyone know how to keep the software from shutting down the machine? i want to still keep the software running for notifications and status checks
thanks

Have you tried uninstalling powerchute and using the built in "ups support" that comes in the power options ?
The functions supported are minimal but I suppose it should suffice.

If you are using powerchute, it will initiate a graceful shutdown if the UPS reaches a low battery point. There is no way to disable this feature as it is the primary function of the software. Perhaps if you described what you are trying to accomplish in your configuration, we can offer some suggestions.

this is an ups on the backup half of a redundant power supply on a server. the main power supply is on a 24 hour UPS but i wanted to protect the backup power supply to a small amount. i like being able to see the stats and messages from the UPS. i just don't want it to shut down the server as it will be way before the server is actually running out of battery. i'm trying to figure out how to have my cake and eat it too. i want communications working, just not autoshutdowns
thanks

I have the exact same issue, but a little different setup. I use the UPS to protect my home A/V equipment, a satellite TV receiver DVR and an external hard drive.
I use my laptop to communicate with the UPS to configure it, etc. only. The laptop is never plugged into the UPS power. It is usually running off of its own battery or from an independent wall plug. I've disabled the automatic starting of the APC software using msconfig, so I only run the software when I need to configure or monitor the UPS.
Last night at 3 AM, the UPS starts beeping. I plug my laptop in to see what is wrong. I have probably set my options to be too protective/restrictive. I think that I had some noise or an overvoltage situation that caused problems. The software said it was a blackout, but it wasn't. That isn't the real problem. The problem is keeping my laptop on long enough to get the UPS reconfigured.
Well, since the battery on the UPS was drained, it insisted on shutting down my laptop. 3 times, until I was fast enough to change some settings before it shut down the laptop.
Today I just spent 80 minutes with telephone tech support and they just could not understand why I would want to do this or that this was an issue. It certainly didn't fall into their troubleshooting scripts.
Another option on this screen to "Never shut down my computer, this computer is used for monitoring only" would be nice. A nice way to disable the APC software from starting at boot time without using msconfig would be nice too.

You can probably create a WMI watcher to watch for shutdown events and issue an abort command...
