security of recall website

This question was originally posted by Bill on APC forums on 10/4/2013

The photos of the serial #'s that people are uploading to the recall website for APC surge protectors are available here:

http://recall.apc.com/sites/default/files/webform/aaaa.jpg

If you change the name of the jpg file from aaaa.jpg to obvious file names that some people might use to describe the various models of surge protectors, you can view the picture and serial number.

This doesn't seem like great security given that the pictures are the ticket to getting a replacement surge protector.

Hi Dave,

I had not been approached to post anything and I just recently learned of the recall myself on Friday. I can add an announcement to the forum no problem.

On apc.com, here is a section for recall information (don't shoot the messenger here on how un-obvious this may be):

1447_recall.jpg

A notice was also sent to many big box retailers as well as the CPSC as you noted.

Forgot to add, here is the link to start with -> IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL | APC by Schneider Electric

I also just did the announcement for the forum/community with these details.

I checked on this and we are in the process of addressing the security concern. Thank you for bringing it up and inquiring.

HI Angela,

This is the first I've heard of the Series 7 and 8 SurgeArrest recall Oct 3. I did a Forum search just now for "Recall" and looked at the "News Headlines" and don't see anything about it, could the forum admins please post something for safety's sake ? I also did a Google search just now for "APC Recall" and did not get a single direct hit for this on any pages / URL's on the Schneider / APC main web site..,all that I saw was a Facebook posting  ! There is nothing at all on the main "APC.COM" web site home page. The primary Google hits that came up are for the CPSC and a few news sites which was very surprising. Is there a link on any of  the Schneider or APC web sites you can pass along for this ?

Thanks,

...Dave
