I just installed a new BR1300LCD. I have been using a BR650 with PowerChute Business edition basic 7.0.5 on Vista with no problems. Everytime I try to add the attached server to the list I recieve a "failed to apply the configuration profile" message.

Yes, I have the RJ45 to USB cable. When I installed the agent it did detect the BR1300 correctly (pop up message). As you said it may have something to do with the signaling. Bizarre that PowerChute Business edition does not support USB.
I will borrow an APC RJ45 to Serial cable and try that.
Thanks.

Keep in mind that with the RJ45 to serial cable, you will not get the same options as you would with PowerChute Personal Edition. You will have to install this as a Back-UPS and choose the UPS. It will not auto-detect. You will only get on-battery, on-line, and low battery events. Nothing else. You will not be able to configure anything on the UPS either.
Business Edition does support USB but only on the business level UPS units. More specifically, the SUA line of Smart-UPS. The USB connected BR units are designed more for a home or home office environment and not for an environment that requires centralized management. The RJ45 to serial will still shut your system down but it is not the best option to be able to configure the UPS or to get voltage, load, and runtime readings. For that you would need Personal Edition.

I strongly recommend using PowerChute Personal Edition 2.1.1 instead of Business Edition.
It can be downloaded from the APC website:
http://www.apcc.com/tools/download/software_comp.cfm?sw_sku=SFPCPE211&id=129&family=&part_num=&swfam...
Later,E

Is there any other software that will email me when a power event occurs such as loss of external AC with this unit?

No, PowerChute Business Edition is the only software that can (partially) communicate with that UPS that is able to e-mail.

Thanks for all of your input, I decided to go with PowerChute Personal Edition 2.1.1.
In Vista I found that I could create tasks attached to log events which can trigger emails. Now all I need is to find the event ids for on AC and on battery. I will probably just pull the plug on the UPS to see what events it generates.

Hello,
Do you by any chance know the part number, or a URL where I can purchase the correct "simple signalling" RJ-45 to RS232 for the BX1500LCD / Back-UPS XS 1500 series UPS? I want to use this unit with Powerchute Business edition, and simple signalling is sufficient. I have had problems in the past with getting the "right" cable for certain APC UPS's...

Not sure why but it is not a purchasable item. You can however go to:
promo.apcc.com
and use the code:
V191Z
It looks like you're registering to receive software and you will but as long as you use the right UPS SKU, you should also get a cable. I would suggest using NT as the OS. Yes, you probably don't have NT but that OS does not support USB (at least not with APC products). With these options, you will receive the RJ45 to serial cable.

I would speculate that they do not approve of people paying less for their "consumer grade" UPS unit, and then using it in a business environment, and getting the benefits of centralized management. They want you to be forced to buy the Smart-UPS. (Not that I have anything against the Smart-UPS)... Why else would they not support the more advanced signalling formats of the BX1500 and similar models? If powerchute business supported that, the only (functional) difference between the smart-ups and the Back-UPS XS would be the plastic versus metal casing!

Not Exactly, Most Smart-UPS have a pure sine wave output whereas back-UPS have a stepped wave. For sensitive equipment or for things that have motors, the Smart-UPS is by far the better UPS. As for signaling, the back-ups does not have all the same data available to the software even though it appears to be just as much. The configuration of the units is similar though but still the Smart-UPS does have more options in this area as well.

Oh well... I honestly would have recommended / bought Smart UPS in this application, but I inherited these Back-UPS from the previous administrator. I tried the promo code you sent. Hope I can get the cables this way as power outages are very frequent here. Thanks for your help!

It may take a week or so to get the cable. The only other way is to call in to tech support and they may be able to get you one.

Does anyone have the pin configuration for the serial cable? I can easily make one if I had that info.

Sorry, it's proprietary. You can go to promo.apcc.com and use the code V191Z.
It will look like your trying to get software (and you will get it) but just say that you need it for your UPS and Windows NT and you should receive the NT specific software (not needed) and you should get the serial cable. It's either that or calling tech support.

This form is asking for the UPS part number but the UPS I have doesn't match the list. If I select one, the serial number I enter won't match the part number. Will it work anyway?

The BR or BX units use the same cable as your BR1300LCD. You can select one of these and get the same cable.
