dumb question: is there any option on an APC battery backup unit to power up an appliance only when power goes off. In other words, I wish for the device to be plugged into the UPS but not to be powered up while the UPS is receiving power. When the power fails, I wish for the UPS to power up my appliance. Please let me know. Thank you.

Of course this isn't the normal function for a UPS.
I can't think of any way to do this directly in the UPS or with any special configuration, however ...
Maybe you could use a relay output card (AP9610) to drive a contactor controlling the input power to your device. Select a SmartUPS of the appropriate size, power a small power supply for the contactor and use the "On Battery" relay output to control the contactor.
