Health concerns.
Acrid smell, stinging eyes, felt ill.
Various reviews indicated "burn in" may resolve this.
Not so.
Disconnected and got it out of the house.
APC will replace but will it happen again?
Is this problem common to the BX1500LCD?

hello,
I totally understand your concern so let me try to answer your questions below.
* APC cannot provide medical advice to you on what to do. but yes, we certainly dont want you to keep a unit like that but you mentioned you are already getting it replaced. this is not common on this model. we have seen units that have required a little "burn in" as you mentioned for the smell to dissipate but it should not last more than a couple hours at most. there may be something else wrong and as mentioned, APC would not want you to continue using the unit in its current condition.
* the MSDS sheets are not model specific because APC can use any of those battery brand names for any unit at any time based on factors such as cost and availability, etc. you can open the battery compartment door and see which brand of battery is used in your unit though. it should say it on the side.
* i am not aware of any WHMIS documentation on this particular UPS but I can look more into it when business resumes on Monday. Do you have the Canadian model, BX1500LCD-CN? This would be on a little white sticker on the back or bottom of the UPS. also, while you check, can you provide the first six characters of your serial number so we can see when it was manufactured?
please let us know if you have any other questions or comments

Thankyou for your response.
Allow me to clarify.
I'm not looking for medical advice.
I joined this forum to share thoughts and experiences.
To identify problems and perhaps offer solutions.
Could have more easily returned it to point of purchase.
As of this writting I have a APC contact name and incident number.
Hopefully, we can put a positive spin on this.
Although, I'm still waiting.
BTW, unable to determine if this is a Canadian model.

This is not a common occurrence with our BX/LCD units at all. I'm sorry to have heard of your unfortunate experience with the unit. Typically failures such as this are caused by a bad battery, hot environment, poor ventilation, or possibly trying to use the unit after it has been stored for a very long time (around a year or more). It sounds like you're getting the replacement taken care of, which is great.
If you want us to confirm your unit/model type, you can give us your model # off the back/bottom of the UPS.

What's the serial number on this UPS?
Does the smell get stronger as you approach the rear fan on the UPS?
I've seen this on some other UPS's, and ultimately with normal use, the curing agent on one of the MOV's will heat up, cause that smell temporarily (and yes, it may give you a headache/make you sick) and then will go away.
If you do not wish to tolerate it, simply have it replaced.

I saw you had an incident #
Maybe Winna, Erasmus, Cap1 or CMFR can take that and get it replaced for you ASAP.
