For about a month I've been hearing a noise from somewhere...my computer is near the kitchen so wasn't sure it wasn't my refrigerator but I found out it's coming from the ups after turning everything off including the computer & external hard drive.
It's a tinny sound that is sometimes intermittent & other times goes on & on until it's beginning to drive me crazy.
My unit is a BackUps XS 900 & is a little over a year old. I'm not getting any warning to replace the battery.
I don't know if this is something serious that needs attention & I don't know what to do about it.
Thanks, Priscilla

ok, sorry about that. i double checked the picture - there is a fan in it but i didnt realize that you couldnt see it from the back.
i would try this procedure at a certain time if you can to reset the UPS, incase it isnt the fan, and see if it clears up the issue, and also it will confirm there is definitely something IN the UPS making a noise if it stops when you do this:
1: Disconnect any attached load.
2: Unplug the UPS from the wall socket.
3: Disconnect the UPS' internal battery.
4: Push and hold the "On" button on the UPS for 5 seconds
5: Reconnect internal battery.
6: Plug UPS in to known good power source.
7: Turn UPS on.

hi
the UPS has a fan on it which will be running a good amount of the time, do you think it could be the fan? perhaps something caught in it as well or maybe it needs a cleaning?

Wow, this is news to me...thanks a bunch. I didn't know there was a fan in it. I'm so careful about keeping the pc cleaned...we have 2 cats.
How do I do this without having to take everything apart or can I do this without unplugging my pc from it?
I lost the motherboard in my other & much older pc while we were up north last year for 3 months...I guess the battery went bad in that APC unit...anyway that's dead in the water & not a fixable problem as far as I'm concerned it isn't worth fixing.
I'm just scared something will go wrong with this new pc by unplugging everything....I don't have another way to protect it from surges/ brownouts.

yeah you definitely dont want to take it apart. that will void the warranty anyway.
you probably just want to see if you can see the fan on the unit and just blow on it a little bit, nothing extreme. double check to see if you see it spinning first of course. if its not spinning, then thats another problem.

There is no fan "on it" & the unit is completely sealed.
