config.ini discrepancies

This was originally posted on APC forums on 1/3/2012

I have been running scripts to backup numerous APC devices of a large variety of models. Basically what I am trying to look into doing is normalizing settings across all of our devices since it appears that a large variety of them were configured manually and there are different settings / alarm thresholds for individual devices. While some should be set on an individual basis, some of these can be applied across the board at a generic level or across a per model basis.

However, I have noticed that even when looking at some models there are differences in some config values that I don' t understand and it doesn't look like we have configured them. Maybe someone can comment on what the differences are and what they mean.

Most of them fall under the EventActionConfig settings, for instance looking at our NetworkAir FM (FM35-50) models, here are some of the event actions settings:
E0039 => E,E[:::],T[:::::](31); E,E[:::],T[:::](2); (Total: 33)
E1307 => ES,E[:::],T[::::-:-](30); ES,E[:::],T[:::::](1); ES,E[:::],T[:::](2); (Total: 33)

What exactly is the difference between the number of colons in each of the sections, the E,E prefix vs the ES,E Prefix, T Prefix? Why do some have dashes instead of colons?

When looking at a global scale across all of our devices at some EventActionConfig settings:
E0002 => ,E[:::],T[::::-:-](283); ES,E[:::],T[::::-:-](40); ES,E[:::],T[:::::](593); ES,E[:::],T[:::::],P[:::](46); ES,E[:::],T[:::](2); Severe, EventLog, Syslog, TrapReceiver[1234], EmailRecipient[1234], Pager[1234](12); (Total: 976)
E0009 => E,E[:::],T[+:::::](1); E,E[:::],T[:::::](915); E,E[:::],T[:::::],P[:::](46); E,E[:::],T[:::](2); None, EventLog(12); (Total: 976)

Some start with a ,E but most either start with E or ES or some combination of that, I'm not sure if those should be configured that way or is it possible that these may have become misconfigured at some point?

Clearly some of these may be different due to differences in firmware versions and what not, but only 1 device has a plus sign in this setting. The plus sign setting appears to be in the model group AP9361 and here is another discrepancy within that model group.
E1C0C => E,E[+-05S+30M04:::],T[:::::](1); ES,E[:::],T[:::::](2); (Total: 3)

So these are somewhat cryptic about what they mean, I am not sure where to look up this information because I don't think its described in the documentation.

take a look at this and let me know if you have any other questions. i just updated it yesterday 🙂

http://nam-en.apc.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/11380

after you read it, you'll see what E and E,S mean and note that only certain events are enabled for syslog by default.

let me know if you have any questions.
