This morning about 3 hours after my son went to school, his 3 day old XS 1500 started to belch smoke. We rushed to unplug it and get it out of the house, the fumes were really noxious. Upon further examination I noticed that one side of the case was partially melted and bubbled out. This was down on the side of the battery compartment. It still was stinking 20 minutes later so we pulled the battery just to be safe. I'm glad we were home, just lucky I guess. His computer still boots but we need to run diagnostics and check the data integrity.
Called APC and they're shipping a replacement in "3 to 5 days." So what do we do until then? Is replacing the bad unit enough? It's 35 degrees here and the whole house smells like burned plastic, not to mention scaring the sh1t out of everyone. Does anyone have experience with APC's responsiveness on these issues? What happens if he's lost data, or cooked one of his cards? Searching the Internet only reveals a few infrequent occurrences of this kind, but that doesn't make me feel much better. How many don't get reported?
I have an XS 1000 right under my desk that I'm now worried about, better get a smoke detector.

hello..we also have this lifetime equipment protection policy which if you file a claim, you get a new unit (which usually could be expedited and i am not sure why it wasnt here) as well as all the other stuff we would cover: http://www.apc.com/support/service/equipment_protection_policy.cfm
you can turn your replacement into a claim if you need to
