There are a few issues going on right now, but the biggest is that the backup shows in the device manager as a "Microsoft Composite Battery". When I try to load Powerchute Personal 2.2 for Windows 7, it gets halfway through the installation and then stops and says "the installer is unable to locate an APC battery backup connected to your computer. In order to disable native power management an APC battery backup needs to be attached. If native power management is not disabled you may receive messages from windows related to a 'battery'."
I just loaded Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on my rig, i was running vista ultimate x64 before and it detected and worked fine.
My other issue is that it doesn't actually trigger correctly (and hasn't since I built this computer). It's a power hog (790i Ultra mobo, 3x 9800GTX+ Black in triple sli, 1kw silverstone psu, q9550, 4gb 2000mhz ddr3, 10krpm 300gb sata HD, etc) but the unit trips and my computer just dies. No shutdown, no warning, just click and dead. Obviously this creates some issues.
Do I need a bigger unit? I replaced the battery a couple months ago (ordered from APC online) and it still does it. What UPS is the right size for my PC and peripherals? I'll replace/upgrade if I need to, but having Powerchute work would be a nice perk.

I suspect your PSU doesn't work on a BackUPS and therefore a bigger unit won't help much... for example see [this thread|http://forums.pcper.com/showthread.php?t=458288]. If you built that machine, the cheapest thing to do is probably to get a new PSU that accepts the simulated sine wave generated by BackUPS and other budget UPSes. Alternatively, I would recommend the [SUA1500|http://www.apc.com/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=SUA1500] or [SMT1500|http://www.apc.com/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=SMT1500] SmartUPS.
edit Just noticed that your PSU (1kW) exceeds the BackUPS' rating (865W). Whatever solution you pick, I'd make sure the UPS meets or exceeds the power supply's wattage requirement. The SUA/SMT2200 satisfies the 1kW power requirement. If you're not using the full 1kW, then the SUA/SMT1500 will probably work.
