Watt is max for Smart-UPS 750?

This was originally posted on APC forums on 4/14/2009

I have a Smart UPS-750, Model # SUA750

I thought the unit was defective so I started a chat with APC support. One thing the tech said stuck in my mind but i only thought about the question afterwards.

He said something about the wattage and the maxium being 500W that should be plugged into the unit. Here are my questions:

1. Does this mean the unit should only be suppling 500W to everything that is plugged into the unit?
or
2. Does each outlet on the back of the unit have a max load of 500W?

3. What are the harms or what would happen if you had the UPS supply a lot more than 500W? Battery die faster? Will it break the UPS?

4. Does the UPS let you know if this is happening?

Thanks in advance for any info.

Hello:

On this unit, the maximum output is 500 watts (or 750 voltamps). This is for the entire unit. All outlets share a common bus and it does not make a difference which outlet you use.

You can monitor the load of the UPS either using our Powerchute software, a Network Management Card, or via the LED bargraph on the left side.

If you go over the maximum load (500w) the UPS will cease to output power, it will emit a constant tone, and the "Overload" LED will come on.

Let us know if there are more questions.

Thanks!
