Around Christmas, 2008, I bought a UPS XS 900. It is now emitting a constant high pitched whining noise. It is not loud like an alarm. However, it is coming from the UPS. When I turn off the battery, the noise goes away.
The battery backup is being used for my home theater. The ringing can be heard over the TV, and since this is in my living room it is really annoying. For now, everything has been plugged into a different surge protector, and the XS 900 has been turned off because of the noise.
There usually is a TV, audio tuner, DVD, VCR, clock and computer plugged into the backup.
It did rain last night (no thunderstorms), and there were no power fluctuations that I am aware of. Other than that, there have been no changes to the power supply over the past year.
Any advice on how to fix the problem?
Thank you.

Jeanie, it some times happens that the Unit is situated in a place where the vibration of it may cause the High Pitched ringing sound also. If again issue persist. Change the place of the Unit and check the performance.

The only light on the system is the green power light that is on all the time anyway. It is not giving any indication that it is in override mode or that there is any other problem with the backup other than that high pitched whine or hum.
Thank you for your help.
Jean

Just to let people know about the outcome, I called customer service. When I flipped the unit over to get the serial number, it stopped whining. So I got a complaint number to reference in the future. But hopefully the problem is fixed.
One working theory I had was that the bearings in the fan were squealing. So when I flipped the unit over, that moved the bearings around enough to at least temporarily stop the noise.
Thanks.
