Surge through USB cable

I have a BACKUPS RS 800 that I purchased with my computer about 4 years ago. A couple weeks ago we had a major lighting strike near our house. We did not loose power. The next day, I noticed the Illuminated Keyboard was not lit while the PC was on. I attempted to log-on and nothing. The Wireless mouse was also not working. Lucky I had my old PS2 keaboard & mouse. I ran diagnostics and found both USB controllers (integrated on the motherboard) failed to initialize.
I later discovered my all-in-one printer was dead also.
Is it possible a surge over the powerlines jumped to the USB controll cable and affected all my USB connected devices?
I remember APC had insurance for connected devices up to $100,000. However, I do not see that on the web site anymore.
Are these losses covered? How do I file a claim?

Hi Bill,

I apologize for what had happened with your equipment. APC offers surge protection devices that prevents from coming either thru power lines or data lines. Our UPSes and Surge Protectors protects your equipment from Power Line surges while APC ProtectNets offers protection for data line surges. Let us say you have a PC and a DSL modem, normally you would connect these two to your UPS/Surge Protector and this helps you with the power line surges. Your modem is then attached to your PC via the ethernet cable/RJ-45 cable, this is what do you call as data line. Surges could use this as a back door to damage your equipment, and this is where our APC ProtectNets are being used. Customers need to be sure that they have bullet proof protection from both power and data line surges.

With regards to covering your losses or filing a claim, I suggest that you call the APC Hotline at 800-800-4272. Our support team would gather information on what had happened and would help you file for a claim. After filing a claim, the case would be handled by our Claims team who would then test the APC equipment and whatever needs to be done. It would really help if you could contact us using the number I have provided.

To know more on how to file a claim please see click on this link --> [How to File an Equipment Protection Policy Claim?|http://nam-en.apc.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1393/kw/surge].
