Hi
I have an APC Surge Arrest 11 and just picked up a Back-UPS NS 1050. I have limited outlets close to the desk and want to know how I can best make use of both of these things from one outlet. I understand that my limitations are: 1) Don't plug UPS into protector; 2) don't plug protector into a battery plug on UPS; 3) don't overload either the battery plugs or a surge plug in the UPS. Having said this; would it be possible (ie safe and recommended) to plug the computer and monitor into the battery back up outlets as one normally would, and THEN plug the Surge Arrrest into a SURGE-ONLY plug at the rear of the UPS with everything else (minus printer) then plugged into the Surge Arrest protector.
Thanks

Well, the APC surge protectors are capable of sustaining a 15A current on 120V which gives you 1800 watts! What kind of device for the consumer will draw 1800watts continually? Unless you connect too many devices on the surge protector at once, the suggestion I gave you is not valid.

Hello,
That is a perfectly acceptable setup. Because both devices are APC Branded, the EPP and warranty will remain in tact.

I myself would connect the surge protector to the wall outlet and then the UPS on the Surge Protector, that's how I do it here. All the important things are connected to the UPS and the thing I don't need to be on during a power outage are connected to the surge protector. The benefit of doing this is that you're protecting the UPS itself from power surges. The surge protector will protect the UPS and the less important stuff connected to it. Both my the UPS and Surge Protector are from APC as well.

I understand the philosophy behind that, however, you have to understand that by connecting a UPS and other devices to a surge protector and THEN to the wall, the devices + the UPS are fighting for power coming from the wall. It is not a distributor of power, it is just a surge protector. Therefore, if your UPS abnormally goes to battery, chances are, there's another item that's being turned on that's drawing more from the power that should be going to the UPS.
