Hi,
After a few years of a nasty vica UPS, my new APC UPS BE550R is like a breath of fresh air, except for one thing:
I have a small home network, comprising of a router, a pc and a couple of laptops. What I want is that the PC shutsdown immediately (This I can do), but that the router continues to run for as long as possible.
What happens currently is that when the PC shutsdown, the UPS shutsdown a couple of minutes later.
If I leave the PC running the I of course shorten my battery time considerably.
I work remotely from a laptop with battery so the network is my primary concern. We have frequent power outs here in Mexico, but the DSL is mostly still present.
Is there something I can do, perhaps at the back end with a terminal? Do I need another UPS to support the router?
TIA,
Alan

If you use a serial communications cable instead of the included USB cable, you may be able to achieve what you would like.
Check out the following forum topic. If the link becomes inactive, search for the topic: "UPS shuts down before hibernation complete". The part of relevance would be at the end of the last paragraph. You may be able to obtain a serial communications cable if your UPS came with an offer for "FREE file-saving, auto-shutdown software kit with serial communications for Windows 95/NT".

Hope this is helpful (just joined the forums, I know your post was in October...)

Alan,
The UPS is programmed to turn itself off after it has confirmed the computer attached has been shutdown. Unfortunately there is no workaround for this. You would have to purchase a second UPS to support the router in order for it to maintain it's on status.
