Hello everyone,
I recently purchased and installed the BR1300LCD model (APC BACK-UPS RS 1300VA LCD 120V). The prime purpose for this UPS was to protect the Network Attached Storage unit and execute a proper shutdown of the NAS in the event of a power outage. I also use the UPS to battery-power my 2 Wireless Routers, my Cable/VoIP Modem. Note that only the NAS requires the Shutdown Instruction during a power outage.
Unfortunately, the APC-supplied USB cable is too short to reach between the UPS <--> NAS. The cable is about 6 feet and I would need a 12 feet cable!
Is-there a 12 or 14 feet cable available that would still support the proper shutdown interface?
If not, could I use a simple USB extension and still work ? ... Or do I need to get a powered mini USB hub with only 1 output to the NAS and still maintain the shutdown interface intact?
Any help would be appreciated.

No, that cable is a serial cable and the Back-UPS model you have doesn't have a serial port.

Hi Luc,
Unfortunately, we don't have USB cable that is 12-14 feet long for a BackUPS unit. What we have is a 15ft cable that we use for Rackmountable Smart UPS. And also, if you thought of using a USB Hub, there's no guarantee that the shutdown will work properly. Honestly, we advise customer to have the cable connected directly to the unit with using any extension hubs.

Unfortunately that's the only length of the cable available. I was going to suggest trying a USB hub, but they're not 100% reliable, especially if the hub loses power (not plugged into the UPS, for example). Comm doesn't always work through the hub and it isn't supported, so if it doesn't work you'll just have to try a different one. Some people have gotten it to work. Never tried an extension before though. Basically try it, test it, and see what happens.

Hi juangele,
Would the 15 ft cable that you referenced for use with the "Rackmountable Smart UPS" also work for my BR1300LCD model (APC BACK-UPS RS 1300VA LCD 120V) ? If yes, would you have the item number so that I could order it ?
I really need to find a solution to shut down the NAS over power outages.
Thanks.
