I have a Smart UPS 620 that doesn't show any indicator lights at all when plugged in. I have no idea what the history of this unit is, it belongs to a new client.
I don't want to invest in a replacement batter without knowing that it actually works.
Any suggestions on how to check this thing out ?

Do you have any other Identical working unit with a good battery? If so, swap the battery and check if the battery is the root cause of the issue. If you do not have another battery which is in good condition, then it is very hard to find out if the issue lies with the battery or the unit.
Did you check the circuit breaker of the UPS at the rear? If the Circuit breaker is tripped, it will not pass the power to the UPS circuitary. Have a look at it and see if it helps.
